Where are all these emoticons coming from? I thought we'd picked emojis! Is this msn?

dominicm09:03:35

I want a 3D bling LOL pls

jasonbell09:03:25

@dominicm just type a : and you'll see the emjois come up, or click the + sign and "add reaction"

jasonbell09:03:33

A new world awaits...... kind of.

dominicm09:03:38

@jasonbell mostly just referring to, what feels like, an increase in usage of the uploaded versions that slack supports. Particularly the animated kind.

jasonbell09:03:22

@dominicm There's every chance that @agile_geek scribbles them on the train to London.

agile_geek09:03:20

You obviously haven't seen my drawing skills!

jasonbell09:03:35

I'm just working on the assumption that anything that looks like it's from Windows95 is possibly your doing 😉

agile_geek09:03:17

@jasonbell if it looks like Gnome then that's more likely

thomas09:03:52

@dominicm if in doubt just do a bruce

otfrom09:03:09

(っ⌒‿⌒)っ

agile_geek10:03:30

Always impressed with @otfrom 's ASCII art

otfrom10:03:33

I'm not sure any of that is ASCII. That's all unicode

otfrom10:03:49

maybe the parens are ASCII ( )

jasonbell10:03:40

So @agile_geek are you saying that all @otfrom can create is parens? harsh dude, harsh 🙂

agile_geek10:03:02

And []{}# obviously

otfrom11:03:26

chrjs I'd need a split version really

agile_geek11:03:57

Just two massive pads with ( and ) on them that you can mash with your fists?

chrjs11:03:40

Oh, that’s just the right hand. The left hand is a 2m wide mechanical keyboard exclusively for emacs modifier keys.

jasonbell11:03:45

It's obviously a slow news day...

chrjs11:03:02

Also, hi all, new here. Talked to @agile_geek on a train recently because of laptop stickers blah blah.

agile_geek11:03:53

@chrjs and you ended up sucked into this inane conversation..... that's teach you Chris!

chrjs12:03:09

Company changed a bit and now I get to do some clojure as a day job.

agile_geek12:03:33

Weren't you doing some Racket too?

dominicm12:03:43

@otfrom highly recommend ergodox if you want a split

chrjs12:03:59

We were doing some Racket. @djtango can tell you more about that than I can though.

korny12:03:34

I remember someone talking about foot-pedals for extra modifier keys - for proper emacs usage you could modify some organ pedals...

korny12:03:02

My favourite explanation of emacs is that it's Esc-Meta-Alt-Cmd-Shift

thomas12:03:23

@agile_geek and @chrjs the two of you met on a train and started talking to each other because of the clj stickers on laptops?

agile_geek12:03:06

@thomas yep. What are the odds, right?

thomas12:03:26

clj + 🚋 = 👍

thomas12:03:20

sounds like a sequence of events...

chrjs12:03:35

Yep. I’ve kept my eye open since on the Friday 18:19 and 19:00 to Newcastle.

agile_geek12:03:46

@chrjs hey, if you just avoid the 18:00 and 18:19 out of KX altogether you can almost guarantee not running into me! 😜

agile_geek13:03:00

@mccraigmccraig that may sound impressive but, and allowed to say this cos my wife was born there (or some other phrase that hints I'm about to be very un-PC), @chrjs did get on the train at Darlington. If you don't understand why this is significant you've never been to Darlington!

mccraigmccraig13:03:26

does darlo have a similar profile to donnie or brid @agile_geek ?

chrjs13:03:52

I got on the train in London @agile_geek, I was just without seat until Darlington 🙂

thomas13:03:20

@chrjs that is what I would say 😉

korny14:03:45

I have a new laptop, so I'm travelling incognito for now. Maybe I should get a clj tattoo...

mccraigmccraig14:03:18

@korny i have no clj stickers - it seems my emacs setup was enough to give me away

Rachel Westmacott16:03:03

I have a clj t-shirt that does a good job of starting conversations with other developers

Rachel Westmacott16:03:27

including a random "CLOJURE, YES!!!" from a passer by in the street once

benedek16:03:21

re the keyboard talk. i just built an atreus. was real fun, really recommend. typing on it: i guess that is the more tricky part…

minimal16:03:09

nice, i built one in 2015, still use it

benedek16:03:57

is your layout published? or you use the default?

minimal16:03:53

it’s practically the same as default but i use momentary layers

benedek16:03:49

interesting… i am tinkering with the layout a lot, guess will die down eventually

minimal16:03:21

can you type faster than 20wpm yet?

benedek16:03:34

don’t think so. i really slowed down. just started mid last week

benedek16:03:44

but have not measured yet

minimal16:03:16

i just kept doing typing tests on http://keyhero.com for weeks

Rachel Westmacott16:03:19

when I learnt dvorak it really slowed me down, but it was soooooo much easier to learn than qwerty

benedek16:03:23

good shout @minimal thx will give it a try

minimal16:03:34

the bottom/3rd row was the hardest

benedek16:03:58

yup i was even thinking to move one row down

minimal16:03:10

and when you have no keycap labels, looking at the keyboard actually makes things worse

benedek16:03:13

but that would kill the 3 thumb keys setup 😕

minimal16:03:30

you get used to it eventually

benedek16:03:07

the 3rd row and pinky is a really bad combination for me

minimal16:03:21

I’m still waiting for http://keyboard.io as well

minimal16:03:27

waiting, waiting

benedek17:03:42

they never actually shipped?

minimal17:03:47

not yet, almost there. the first 100 test run is going to be done this month hopefully. If that works then they can go full speed on the rest

benedek17:03:01

interesting

benedek17:03:29

is the atreus your main keyboard so to say?

benedek17:03:45

so will you replace it with the keyboardio if it works out?

minimal17:03:47

my main one at home, i have a realforce topre at work

minimal17:03:37

so i;ll probably try and go ergo in both places when keyboardio comes

benedek17:03:29

i see. i am just thinking to put together an other atreus for home. tbh i should cool it a bit and wait until i am really sure i am happy with it and have a stable layout too

minimal17:03:12

it would be nice to have more keys on the atreus

benedek17:03:17

not even the quiet no tactile ones? (what is the point then i guess.. really just to answer my own question)

benedek17:03:37

there is this atreus+

benedek17:03:44

with an added row and added column

minimal17:03:03

you can learn to like mechanical switches @mccraigmccraig . I used to love the apple scissor switches, now i hate them

benedek17:03:06

i am actually thinking adding an extra thumb key

minimal17:03:07

interesting

mccraigmccraig17:03:14

if they were quiet and didn't travel far then i'm sure i could get along with them, but yeah, not sure what the point would be then

mccraigmccraig17:03:36

that's classic stockholm syndrome @minimal 😬

minimal17:03:40

you don’t make them travel far when you use them properly

minimal17:03:16

hehe, well i liked the apple ones until my hands started hurting years later

mccraigmccraig17:03:20

yeah, if my hands hurt that would probably make me look for something else, but happily they don't

minimal17:03:44

i’d say liking apple laptop keyboards is stockholm syndrome because you have no other choice 😉

minimal17:03:11

my atreus uses matias switches which are ALPS like the old apple keyboards so they used to know what they were doing

benedek17:03:22

mine too. really like them. only hate the nonexistent keycaps situation for matias switches

benedek17:03:43

even looking at having some 3d printed

minimal17:03:20

i don’t have confidence that i could take the blanks off my atreus without breaking it though

benedek17:03:12

you probably need to desolder them

benedek17:03:40

hm.. interesting… any idea about shipping/tax costs?

benedek17:03:35

not that bad

minimal18:03:43

i’m tempted but not tempted by removing all the current keycaps

benedek18:03:54

haha, i know lots of soldering work

minimal18:03:19

in theory you shouldn’t have to resolder but it could end badly

minimal18:03:04

they grip a lot stronger than my realforce, which is easy to remove the caps from

dominicm22:03:30

I don't think you can do it ahead of time like that

gjnoonan22:03:37

@dominicm we practice UGT in here

seancorfield22:03:22

Always morning when you join, always evening when you leave. I’ve always loved UGT from back in the early IRC days 🙂

gjnoonan22:03:16

Morning Sean 👋

dominicm23:03:14

I think I didn't understand UGT. Mostly because I was a teenager. "morning" was both when I woke up & when I joined IRC. It was usually afternoon.

dominicm23:03:30

I mentally complected the two,
