Hey there @gjnoonan - how are you today? I am reeling from the Hard Brexit certainty and wishing for Professional Clojure in my future as a mood offset 😉

maleghast07:01:36

How goes it?

paulspencerwilliams07:01:35

@maleghast not too bad cheers. Just fixing up acceptance tests this morning. Therapeutic!! And you?

maleghast08:01:44

Glad to hear that you are “not too bad” 🙂 I am reeling from yesterday’s Brexit revelations, if I am honest, but otherwise well

agile_geek10:01:36

Was watching @tcrayford's EuroClojure 2015 talk again yesterday. Fascinating and reminds me of a talk given by Andy Dinn at skillsmatter a while ago (I've met Andy a few times as he's Newcastle based). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tUrbf6Uzu8 https://skillsmatter.com/skillscasts/6252-what-lies-beneath-a-tour-of-the-dark-gritty-underbelly-of-openjdk

If anyone already has a ticket for Devoxx UK, I am sure that @agile_geek, @jonpither and I would appreciate your support in the golden ticket voting for our Clojure talks. Anyone else hoping to speaking at Devoxx UK on Clojure things?

practicalli-johnny12:01:43

If you would like to support the general JVM community, Steve Pitchford has also submitted a talk for Devoxx UK that sounds great.

acron13:01:18

Anyone from juxt about?

jasonbell13:01:33

@acron thereis a #juxt channel too if that’s any help

acron13:01:25

already posted there 😉 but thanks

jasonbell13:01:32

ah apols, np

jonpither14:01:54

I often hit @tcrayford resources for tuning...

otfrom15:01:47

looks like someone is hiring for clojure in Bristol. Any idea tcoupland ?

lsnape15:01:07

Anyone here had any experience using lambdacd?

otfrom15:01:25

I've not, but I'm very interested to hear if anyone has

agile_geek15:01:47

Ditto...although I've briefly played with it.

otfrom15:01:08

wdyt agile_geek ?

agile_geek15:01:14

I like the idea of specifying CD pipelines in code but I'd need to use it in anger to form an opinion beyond that.

tcoupland15:01:47

@otfrom aye, it's Ovo. If anyone wants an in with them give me a shout, gots lots of people looking for hiring bonuses 😉

lsnape15:01:16

Me too. I’m keen to move away from a SaaS CI, but not overly excited about setting up a Jenkins server!

tcoupland15:01:29

@lsnape nope here, we just bit the bullet and jenkins it last week 🙂

tcoupland15:01:19

say what you want about Jenkins, is does pretty much work and is familiar.

tcoupland15:01:33

nice to have one thing that isn't Wizz Bang, No Docs!

agile_geek15:01:53

@tcoupland that's the attitude taken by most of the cleints I work with.

tcoupland15:01:10

i like me some Wizz Bang as much as the next fella, but too much of a good thing and all that

lsnape15:01:54

you’re right Tom. I’ll do some more digging on lambdacd first before I bail on it 🙂

glenjamin15:01:33

@lsnape why do you want to stop using a SaaS CI?

otfrom15:01:16

glenjamin Americans

otfrom15:01:34

they ruin everything, usually starting at around 2PM London time

otfrom15:01:07

and they are awful. Have you met any? :shudder:

otfrom15:01:21

no sense of humour or irony

otfrom15:01:24

can't spel

glenjamin15:01:31

Can you pay them a bit more for priority? I’ve spent soooo much time pissing about keeping jenkins running I’d love to stop doing that

lsnape16:01:09

@glenjamin what otfrom said. We’ve had lots of downtime and general annoyance caused by SaaS lately. Not just our CI to be fair, but Travis is a repeat offender.

lsnape16:01:35

had lots of fun with Sendgrid today: deferred email sends due to IP throttling. We upgraded to dedicated IP and suddenly all our emails stopped sending because they forgot to assign us an IP! 😠

glenjamin16:01:27

probably still a net gain over doing it yourself?

lsnape16:01:36

For emails, yeah for sure.

lsnape16:01:17

But adds to my general unease of relying on SaaS 😕

glenjamin16:01:50

I know the feeling, but I think we often do a poor job of accounting for costs of in-house approaches

paulspencerwilliams17:01:39

@glenjamin that's 💯percent my view

acron16:01:22

@glenjamin For our use there were other benefits but it definitely took more time than we anticipated. It's certainly nice being able to go to bed and not have to worry about whether the CI will still be running in the morning 😉
