Morning from Fuerteventura.

seancorfield06:08:01

"Morning" from California 🙂

seancorfield06:08:37

We're looking at T-Mobile for a worldwide data plan...

seancorfield06:08:38

...international data can be cripplingly expensive 😞

agile_geek06:08:01

"Morning" @seancorfield. I don't go abroad much (first time in 18 months) and only on Hols these days so not much of an issue.

seancorfield06:08:11

When we were in Malta, the wifi was next door in the bar -- the hotel didn't have any -- but we could just about get a signal if we pressed up against the hotel room door... so of course we spent a lot of time in the bar next door 🙂

agile_geek06:08:26

Good excuse!

seancorfield06:08:39

Then in Moscow, the hotel had awesome wifi... which we needed for Google Translate since no one spoke English...

seancorfield06:08:21

...when we visit England, it seems to have the worse general availability of free public wifi of anywhere we go 😞

agile_geek06:08:41

WiFi in my Hotel is slow but workable, but its astonishing how much I rely on data on my phone when i'm out and about, googling locations and sites, google maps, etc. Having to try and figure stuff out without it is taxing and stressful. Can't remember what I did just 10 years ago before all that existed!

seancorfield06:08:14

We said "Um, er" a lot I suspect.

agile_geek06:08:27

Free public wifi in UK is really poor. Even London has spotty coverage. I hug the coffee shops.

seancorfield06:08:58

My wife and I favor McD's and BK's 🙂

agile_geek06:08:50

I think the fact that I'm gluten intolerant & can't order much in McD's or BK means I tend to be shamed out of using them!

agile_geek06:08:25

Off for a morning swim now!

seancorfield07:08:46

🏊:skin-tone-2:

thomas08:08:04

sounds lovely @agile_geek enjoy it.. and don’t show up too much here… you are, after all, on holiday 😉

agile_geek08:08:48

@thomas: Rodger wilco. Just figured out my phone switches off data roaming automatically when it switches networks so it's working now Doh!

korny09:08:04

At least in the UK mobile plans are cheap and fast. I never even look for free wifi here, as my 3G is usually faster

thomas09:08:08

I tend to use 3G/4G where possible. and abroad isn’t too bad either (EU that is, haven’t been outside EU since I’ve got a smartphone)

djtango09:08:18

I didn't have internet in my apartment for over a month, so was tethering on my 4G to great effect - was getting download speeds of up to 6MBps

djtango09:08:46

(bit mental when not all that long ago seeing 100KBps on your desktop was lightning fast)

practicalli-johnny09:08:30

Hello @agile_geek how do you get an event put up on the ClojureBridge website?

thomas09:08:38

when we moved house in 2010 we didn’t have broadband for a few weeks and I bought a dongle… streaming iPlayer wasn’t a problem at all.

agile_geek09:08:59

@jr0cket: you have to raise an issue in github with event details. You'll find my one in closed issues

practicalli-johnny10:08:20

Do remember which repo, there are many... Never mind, I found it in Workshops...

djtango10:08:22

only thing is that streaming these days which is usually HD consumes data at a pretty alarming rate, I think HD is probably ~2+GB per hour? I was racking up the data consumption pretty fast when streaming Wimbledon or Euros earlier this year

thomas10:08:44

The iPlayer was streaming 2TB/sec during the England-Wales game earlier this summer.

davesnowdon10:08:52

@thomas: 2Tb/sec? You must have an impressive broadband service 🙂

thomas10:08:12

@davesnowdon that was server side 😉

korny10:08:37

re: 3G - it’s all good in Europe, especially with companies like 3 giving free roaming, and the new caps to roaming charges (hope they survive brexit!)

korny10:08:48

but when I was travelling from Australia, it was a nightmare

glenjamin10:08:25

three’s tariff is great if you’re somewhere that’s on the list
