Our ballot was really kinda boring today -- anyone have an interesting ballot in Ohio? We had some tax levies (mostly renewal of existing) and local elections for township trustees, board of education services, and local school board (several incumbents after re-election in all three races). Compared to California, it as surprisingly hard to find out anything about the candidates (or the tax levies) -- in CA, we're used to massive voter information guides with candidate statements and financial analysis with pros and cons on all the measures! A diferent world!
i'm looking across the river (nky) with bated breath
What's on the ballot in N. KY?
no votes this year! kentucky voted to give ourselves every 4th year off from voting lol
back in 1992
Right, I read that and hence my puzzlement -- so you're actually in KY, not OH?
yeah, i'm directly across the river from cincinnati, inside the 275 beltway. i spent my life living in cincinnati ohio and then bought a house in nky with my wife because houses are cheaper down here
but fun fact, we're planning on moving back to cincinnati at some point next year. our only friendly neighbors are moving, and our kids go to a montessori school 45 min away so we gotta get out of here
I didn't realize that "Greater Cincinnati" included a bit of KY like that! 🙂 The affordability of OH was a big (pleasant) shock to us -- we didn't look at KY tho'...
as you can see on the left side of that image, the 275 even sneaks into indiana lol
We're still getting used to seeing that I-80 goes West to Cleveland from us -- given that we used to live pretty much at the Western end of I-80 before 🙂
Yeah, compared to california, ohio is very cheap. But all of the "nice" communities in cincinnati have been creeping up over the years and when we bought this house I wasn't making the salary i am now
Even 24 years ago, our 3 bed / 2 bath 1,500 sq ft + 2-car garage on a quarter acre house in the East Bay cost $370K. Our 3 bed / 2 bath 1,500 sq ft + 2-car garage on a quarter acre house in Ohio cost $205K.
our house is 5 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, finished basement, lil backyard, $220k. cincinnati houses of the same size are like $400-500k, so we're def gonna need to lower our expectations
A lot of properties around here stay on the market for months and months and often drop in price. Ours was $215K when we first looked at it, and dropped to $207K while we were house-hunting. After the home inspection identified a bowed wall in the basement, we offered $205K and they accepted. That was February. They'd had it on the market on and off since November. The house next door has been fully renovated (work has been ongoing for about a year, apparently) and it went on the market a couple of weeks ago, then dropped $5k, then went off-market again. They're after ~$250k I think which is too much for this area. A place round the corner is asking $230k (it's 1,658 sq ft) but it has been on the market for nearly six months. Several of the places we looked at back in February are still on the market, many of them $10-20K less than when we went round them.
wow, that's wild
Houses your size in this neighbor are substantially more -- $350-400K
Ours: https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/M4011210806 -- and we've added a front porch and ramp, an enclosed patio at the back, and a big deck around the swim spa and hot tub we put in.
(925 sq ft plus over 500 sq ft of finished basement)
wow y'all have been busy, sounds like you'ev done a lot of good work on it
Front porch and back deck / catio / spas:
We also had a new roof put on -- the home inspection didn't catch how bad it was, and we are installing solar on the house and garage.
The back yard before (from that realtor listing):
In the spring, we'll get the whole patio / fire pit redone.
look at that beautiful ramp
Jay needs it with her bad knees. And for those times when one of us might be in a wheelchair 🙂
