I would assume that the recent turn comes from the fact that the parent company (WeWork) is under a financial crisis, not clear yet how that's gonna play out

which makes me fear for some unexpected turn of events at any moment after the new owners come into play

note: I contacted http://meetup.com support asking for clarifications on the new pricing model, but as expected I didn't hear from them in weeks

It makes sense to start to look for something else. Buy there doesn't seem to be a good alternative. I was especially surprised this would be the last on meetup. It's true it only does little, but it does makes it easier for new people to find the meetup.
