Don't know if there are exceptions possible for open source. Otherwise with our numbers either let the attendees pay, but besides the 1$ you might need a credit card, putting of a lot. Or some company that wants to sponsor these things?

gklijs04:10:55

Maybe some other platform pops up that doesn't cost as much?

skuro06:10:34

That's borderline outrageous

skuro06:10:55

I'll investigate and see what possibilities are available

Stefan07:10:57

@borkdude @skuro If I read it correctly, it’s even $2 instead of $1 mentioned in that tweet, see https://www.meetup.com/lp/paymentchanges.

Stefan07:10:28

I was on the verge of creating a new meetup for our coding dojo, not gonna happen now.

Mno07:10:01

We'll make our own meetup, with clojure and clojurescript 😄

thomas07:10:01

morning... yeah charging that much is outrageous...

eval202010:10:40

getTogether was mentioned several times. It’s opensource and their goal is to be a meetup alternative: https://github.com/GetTogetherComm/GetTogether#goals. “cost-effective hosting for FOSS communites” sounds also interesting for the clj-meetup but I couldn’t find more details on https://gettogether.community

Mno11:10:54

I heard the pricing doesn't apply to non-profits or Pro networks (whatever those are)

Mno11:10:36

>This change won't affect a number of groups such as Pro Networks and Non-Profits. Please contact us directly with specific questions.

Stefan11:10:42

That’s nice and vague…

eval202012:10:21

TIL http://meetup.com is owned by wework (yikes!)

eval202012:10:45

btw I’ll happily donate my time to help setting up/maintaining an alternative

borkdude12:10:14

the nice thing about meetup was that it's easy to discover events near you

borkdude12:10:45

hosting it yourself on some custom domain kind of takes that away

Stefan12:10:36

https://gettogether.community/ also does that, right? Even though their business model is not clear to me at this point.

Stefan12:10:27

Ah wait I found it, it’s donationware.

Mno13:10:52

We can do this the clojure way, by making our own platform, that has interoperability with the other hosts (so basically getting all the info from sources like gettogether and even meetups itself.)

borkdude13:10:03

or just a plain old mailing list 😛

Mno13:10:17

mailing lists that sends you events near you?

skuro13:10:48

mailing lists would be the death of the interactions, slack or zulip would be just more effective

skuro13:10:03

at the moment I wrote to the http://Meetup.com support to ask for clarifications

skuro13:10:34

if that route fails miserably, @eval2020 you can expect me to reach out for the gettogether setup

Mno14:10:46

someone in my work slack mentioned this place: https://www.downtomeet.com/ f

Mno14:10:03

specifically he said: >we have been using https://www.downtomeet.com/ for something for a while, more feature rich than meetup, and it’s free.

skuro14:10:29

@hobosarefriends thanks for the link! I'm a bit skeptical of free services as I'm ethically against turning my meeps (meetup peeps) data into someone's profit, but seems like downtomeet is more geared towards a http://meetup.com like model where the organizer is taxed a nominal fee. I'll read up the T&C

Mno14:10:22

Yeah I didn't go over it myself, so I can't say anything about that.

Mno14:10:39

Hopefully we find a nice drop in replacement

skuro14:10:22

just skimmed over the T&C and the privacy statement of downtomeet, seems legit

Stefan18:10:34

I’ve setup a new event for our coding dojos on http://Gettogether.com. It a refreshingly simple thing that seems to work well. I share @skuro’s scepticism but for this I’m reasonably comfortable.

borkdude20:10:04

> It a refreshingly simple thing that seems to work well. That sounds a lot like clj !

borkdude20:10:31

btw that link points me to https://www.domainking.com ...

eval202020:10:52

“This is the home of The REAL Domain King®” 😆

Stefan20:10:09

Thanks! 😄
