morning...

vijaykiran08:06:38

Learning Haskell at ZuriHac 😛

borkdude09:06:51

@vijaykiran Have fun with Finnigans Wake!

borkdude10:06:41

@nmdrenard are you also there?

niels10:06:49

Lol, yes I am

borkdude10:06:03

I’m starting to develop FOMO

helios11:06:33

i think it's a rebranded Clevo, same as System76 and Sager (in europe)

helios11:06:52

they look identical

borkdude11:06:11

the body is probably identical. but does rebranded mean “not good”?

borkdude11:06:35

I compared it with http://bto.eu, they seem to offer the same body, but the battery time from tuxedo is a lot better and they guarantee linux support

mpenet11:06:50

advertised battery time?

helios11:06:07

they say 12 hours, with 36Wh

mpenet11:06:12

or actual from an independant review. Most of the time vendors lie about this

helios11:06:29

> We're testing battery time always in idle mode, at minimal display brightness, with keyboard backlight deactivated, WIFI & Bluetooth disabled and without any further connected devices (USB, LAN, HDMI, VGA etc. unplugged!).

helios11:06:48

Yeah i also think that the advertised battery life is meaningless

mpenet11:06:39

it's quite small for a laptop battery

mpenet11:06:32

xps13 has 52wh, or even 60wh depending on the model

mpenet11:06:37

to give you an idea

niels12:06:10

kicks in door ThinkPad ThinkPad ThinkPad

borkdude12:06:40

what about ThinkPad @nmdrenard, any good?

niels12:06:41

I'm glad you asked. I haven't bought any non thinkpad laptop since 2004 I think

niels12:06:11

Have been using T470p for past two years, really great. 480 is good too. Perfect driver support on linux

niels12:06:21

Course starting, afk

mpenet12:06:20

I used to be a thinkpad person too (x51, x61s, x200, x410s), moved to dell linux laptop and not looking back so far. I am tempted to try pixelbook now that linux support doesn't require any hack and people like bodil give it really good reviews.

borkdude12:06:43

what distros are you using?

mpenet12:06:06

the dell I have came with it preloaded, perfect driver support out of the box as well

mpenet12:06:02

apparently google will release a new pixelbook this year, maybe it's worth waiting a bit

gerstree13:06:09

The TUXEDO looks nice, make sure to pick the largest disk for immutable storage 😉

helios07:06:54

yeah the price/perf seems quite decent

mpenet08:06:26

the battery is quite small I wouldn't consider it just for this

helios08:06:00

just wondering: for how long do you normally use a laptop without being connected to power? I found myself rarely using it for more than 2 hours, in normal circumstances

mpenet08:06:42

yeah it's quite subjective. I actually like to work from outside

mpenet08:06:04

so it can be 8h+ with what I consider normal use

helios08:06:25

wow, I never got 8h even with my brand new MBP in 2014. What do you use as daily driver?

mpenet08:06:38

xps13 (i7) from 2019

mpenet08:06:44

with the "low end" screen (fhd)

vijaykiran11:06:43

@nmdrenard Where!? I met Michel, this morning at the registration btw.

niels11:06:37

Advanced Track room :') about to begin the advanced course on types

vijaykiran11:06:59

Cool! I'm in the beginner 🙂 Have fun - and maybe I'll bump into you folks

niels12:06:08

If this doesn't work out I'll have to switch to beginner. I signed up for intermediate, but there's no such thing

borkdude12:06:35

> GHC type system extensions like GADTs?

borkdude12:06:17

Saturday seems interesting to me: > He will teach you how to properly reason about evaluation in Haskell program, and discuss performance pitfalls.

borkdude12:06:28

cool, have fun!
