morning! trying to roll out a new version of plantuml-mode today

🎉 4
borkdude08:05:10

I’m about to release a new version of clj-kondo this weekend with detection for unused bindings (function arguments, let bindings, etc.) I’d appreciate it if someone would test this, since I refactored quite a bit of code…. So if you’re bored… 🙂

Stefan09:05:47

I’m not often bored, but I do try to squeeze as much quality Clojure time out of my personal time, so I can give it a shot tonight if you want. My code base is still very small and I’m mostly trying out stuff, but I’d be happy to test it.

borkdude09:05:30

Thanks! Are you using Mac, Linux or Windows?

borkdude09:05:25

I see you joined the #qa channel, so the link is there as well

Stefan09:05:50

Yep. I’m a Mac user.

Stefan09:05:12

In fact I’m going to order a new personal MacBook next week. I don’t trust the one I have anymore. It regularly completely hangs, I sometimes see things that might point to data corruption 😞 In the old days I used to know and recognize the signs of a failing hard drive, but I find that much harder with SSDs…

Stefan09:05:57

Battery is also poor by now. The machine is from 2013. Still pretty good in terms of performance 🙂

borkdude09:05:09

how old is it?

borkdude09:05:26

are you going for the new i9 8-core Macbook Pro?

Stefan09:05:45

I’m thinking i7. Don’t really need the extra bit of performance I guess.

Stefan09:05:01

Rather spend those couple of hundred euros on an new display.

borkdude09:05:45

I’m looking at it myself too, 32GB of memory would be nice… but 4200 euros (for the 8 core + 1TB SDD), I’ll have to think about it 🙂

Stefan09:05:43

Yeah the memory is also difficult decision for me. Lots of money.

borkdude09:05:57

then again, I can deduct BTW etc because I’m a freelancer

Stefan09:05:32

Yeah I don’t have that luxury. Might wanna try at some point, but the concept scares me 🙂

borkdude09:05:59

I’m a bit reluctant about the new Macbook stuff, because I heard bad things about the keyboard and throttling because of high temperatures which makes the 8 cores pointless

Stefan09:05:22

I think the temp issue was initially because of firmware bug?

borkdude09:05:22

then again, I also don’t want to spend time on fixing drivers for a cheap linux laptop

Stefan09:05:33

But i7 shouldn’t have the temp issue at all 🙂

borkdude09:05:47

yeah, maybe the i7 makes sense 🙂

Stefan09:05:14

Indeed, and isn’t it amazing that even after more than 5 years the machine still is absolutely fine in terms of performance, and completely supported!

borkdude09:05:36

well, that machine is from before 2016 😉

borkdude09:05:53

when the Macbooks were still good

Stefan09:05:00

Keyboard you mean?

borkdude09:05:05

overall yeah

borkdude09:05:34

Maybe other people here can share their experiences with a > 2016 Macbook. The rumors on the internet might not always give a fair picture

Stefan09:05:35

At work I have the one from summer ’18. I’m very happy with that one…

borkdude09:05:54

that’s good to hear

Stefan09:05:37

At work we have tens of them, I’m not really hearing about issues. Personally I don’t worry about it in terms of buying one myself.

Stefan09:05:21

SSD size is also difficult decision for me btw. I currently have 1TB and struggling to fit everything on. But maybe I should move my photos off to an external drive. It’s sooooo convenient to have everything available all the time though.

Stefan09:05:41

And I have to deal with whatever I buy now for at least 5 more years of course.

Stefan09:05:07

But €720 extra for 2TB… 😞

borkdude09:05:15

I use Dropbox which lets you selectively sync stuff, but I’m still going for 1TB next time (currently 512GB)

Stefan09:05:54

I’m not using any of those cloud services atm. Value my privacy too much I guess 😉

borkdude09:05:03

makes sense

borkdude09:05:28

I sold my soul long ago

Stefan09:05:53

hehe never too late. It’s like smoking: one day you just quit. 🙂

borkdude09:05:15

I actually did that 🙂

Stefan09:05:31

Awesome, good for you!!

skuro09:05:32

good luck letting any subset of the internet completely forget about you 🙂

Stefan09:05:06

Yeah well it also takes 10 years for the tar to get out of your system after you quit smoking 😉

borkdude09:05:17

I quit when I was 19, now I’m 38 🙂

skuro09:05:03

<optimism mode="off">in this day and age, if you let your stuff leak in someone's datacenter it's more akin to radiation exposure rather than smoking: those genetic mutations aint getting away!`</optimism>`

Stefan09:05:13

I agree this is a big problem in our current society, we need to find a way to deal with this. Has to be legislation + tech iMHO. Interesting by the way that legislation (at least here in EU) has a lead on the technology in this case, usually it’s the other way around.

gklijs14:05:35

Next Clojure meetup will have (streaming) video.

eval202015:05:22

feels no pressure whatsoever 😳

borkdude15:05:31

I’ll be there asking stupid questions to make you look smart, if that helps? 😉
