Mornin’

borkdude07:05:21

I see that Apple has new Macbook Pros out…

thomas07:05:45

yes, but how much memory do they have?

thomas07:05:06

I didn't see that anywhere (but I didn't really look that hard either)

kirill.salykin07:05:41

> I see that Apple has new Macbook Pros out… same as before base 16gb 32gb + 480 euro

kirill.salykin07:05:57

but free delivery!

kirill.salykin07:05:22

so, cheapest 15" with 32Gb - 3300 euro

xps15 with similar/better(?) spec (i9, 32g, ssd 1T) is 1k less

kirill.salykin12:05:44

I would argue about spec similarity

kirill.salykin12:05:06

it is not limited to CPU and memory

mpenet12:05:23

gfx card is from a different vendor, but I doubt the difference justifies 1k

kirill.salykin12:05:59

I agree it is overpriced, but I would still prefer macbook to xps

mpenet12:05:07

Anyway, I am not advocating buying an xps, just noticing the substantial price gap

mpenet12:05:50

(I do own an xps13 tho, and prefer it to recent macbooks 🙂, but that's just me)

thumbnail08:05:04

So 480 euro for 16gb of ram? I heard there was a shortage, but damn

mpenet08:05:14

apple always puts insanes prices on extra ram

mpenet08:05:18

nothing new

Mno09:05:32

It’s normally easily changeable on mbps though.

thumbnail10:05:00

I'm pretty sure it's soldered

thumbnail10:05:22

Also, ram upgrades are only possible since the second gen touchbar. Right?

borkdude10:05:30

RAM upgrades have been around since my first Mac laptop (2011)

thumbnail15:05:38

Really? I remember not being able to get above 16GB for a long time; but maybe that was just the max for a long time then

borkdude15:05:10

that’s true, but some devices started with 4GB or 8GB, so upgrading to 16GB was the upgrade

thumbnail15:05:34

Ah; then i just assumed wrong. good catch 😛

borkdude10:05:36

i9 8-core… I wonder how much performance drops with those recent hyperthreading security fixes

gklijs10:05:16

And how long it can run at max speed on all cores.

borkdude10:05:55

I typically don’t run it as a production server, but it’s nice to have it peak during GraalVM compilation 😉

borkdude10:05:33

@gklijs you own one of the newer Macbook Pros right? did you have any trouble with it? I’ve heard of keyboard complaints and uneven backlight complaints.

gklijs10:05:42

I have this one a few month, and so far no issues, except crashing one time, but I was creating a lot of threads at that moment because of a bug in the code. It has 6 cores. The one before that was smoking after a year or two..

Also had one broken button for a day, but luckily resolved itself. And the macbook before it had a flaky bluetooth which was fixed by taking it on a flight..

Lennart Buit12:05:28

booting a clojure repl is already full load right :’)

Lennart Buit12:05:39

(Is that parallelized even?)

borkdude12:05:19

clojurescript compilation has that option
