my brain slows down at about 28 degrees. Hope you all made it through all right!

My partner and I fled to the seaside on Rügen. It was 10-12° cooler than Berlin, but still very hot for cycling 🥵

I learned last summer that I actually prefer temperatures where I'm able to move around 😂 Took me a third of a decade to discover!

I think it was LKY who praised the AC and made civilizational development possible in the tropics. You can't think or work when it gets that hot and humid.

Yeah, there's definitely an operating range for human wetware. It varies by person, but there are also absolute bounds. Like @teodorlu, I cannot think past 28° or so, especially in the face of humidity. Currently considering relocation to CPH as a climate refugee…

tbh I fail to understand why you guys won't just install AC units

key word there is "just". these things cost money. to buy and operate. and depending on the situation it can be quite costly to install.

I could have gotten one and may get one, but there's a stubbornness in me against smoothing over problems. For a headache, would sleep and water be better than painkillers?

You'll sleep a lot better and have no headaches with AC 😁

What's your threshold for expensive considering you'll use them every summer for years hence?

Everything about this place was designed to make it as warm as possible in winter because the historical weather in Berlin was never like this. There are no correctly shaped windows for a window unit, nor open sections of outward facing wall for one of the candybar units you see in Spain. To do this properly for this flat is a ~10k€ job, and I’m renting. 🤷🏻‍♂️ The good news is that outside of heat waves it’s fine. The bad news is that there will only be more and worse heat waves in the future. 😞

People do get AC installed (mostly as heat pumps), but this is usually a thing in detached homes that aren't connected to any kind of central heating. The value proposition isn't great otherwise, at least in Denmark it isn't.

Speaking of central (in English usually “district”) heating, have you seen the Fraîcheur de Paris? Very cool project to provide “district cooling” that uses underground water cooled to 3-5ºC piped into buildings in the summer. Many advantages in terms of power use/carbon emissions, and doesn’t dump waste heat onto the streets of the most densely inhabited city on the continent. https://www.fraicheurdeparis.fr

Ah right, central heating is a false friend. I didn't know about that French project in particular, but I've definitely heard about the concept before.
