Good dewy morning
Good misty morning
FYI there will be a Q&A about the clojure documentary with Rich on Friday
can you watch the Q&A later as well?
No idea but I'm gonna assume yes
We're recording it so we can post it.

appreciated! I would have missed this otherwise, with all my muted channels π
good morning
morning!
anyone else getting more sensitive to distractions as they get older? six months ago, I swapped my samsung phone for a black and white e-ink android. Then I started listening seriously to Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson, appreciating the clear, distraction free sound. Now, at work, I find myself having to just close every window not essential to my work. No wonder people move to the forest (or move a mini-forest to their roof) π
Most things can be treated as a mailbox to check when you decide to. The few notifications I allow are DMs from close friends and family.
I was in Paris two weeks ago and realized that I could not live there due to sensory overload. My best ideas/decisions come in long walks in nature.
I can work in the noise of a coffee place but I can't work in the noise of an office, I have to wear noise cancelling headphones
how's the e-ink android suiting you?
it just does its job. I can call folks, send text messages and chat. Video is not worth trying, and Google maps is a bit painful, but it works. Camera is quite bad. It's decreased my phone usage, reduced interruptions from my phone, and caused me to call more and chat less. Overall I'm 50 / 50 on staying with it or going back to my samsung. Old samsung has way better camera, better google maps, and I find I type faster on SwiftKey on the Samsung than on the e-ink android; mostly because I can see what I typed quicker, then I type quicker. I thought I would read more papers and books with the e-ink, but instead, I've started carrying a physical book in my backpack π I like turning pages, flipping back and forth, and quickly referencing table of content as I'm looking at different chapters. Regardless if I stay or not, it will have given me way healthier habits. I'll stick with the "reduced motion" setting (fewer unnecessary animations) and black/white or other "soften the colors" settings if I go back to the Samsung.
My nod to this is to run VS Code full screen and have my Windows taskbar auto-hide. I have a clock extension in VS Code so I can keep track of time with needing to make the taskbar show or switch windows. And I rely on the built-in web browser in VS Code for docs etc, and things like the Atlassian extension (Jira + BitBucket all inside VS Code) to avoid switching contexts.
I have often thought about getting something like that, actually. Every once I a while I will do an extreme detox and delete every app on my phone that I feel is a time sink, also setting up a bunch of obstacles for myself, but I inevitably end up working my way around it in a moment of weakness. In the end, the only permanent "fix" for distractions I could find was to turn off notifications for everything except the messengers I use for daily communication. This is a decent compromise as it removes actual distractions, but obviously doesn't prevent occasional mindless Reddit browsing.
My conclusion is similar regarding phone use. Default is no notifications, unless there's a compelling reason otherwise.
Cool, which e-ink android did you end up buying? Many of them are using a custom OS where Iβd rather go Android
Minimal Phone 1 / https://minimalcompany.com/collections/frontpage/products/minimal-phone
interesting e-ink device discussed here now too: https://clojurians.slack.com/archives/C03S1KBA2/p1776826199524709?thread_ts=1776806329.066719&cid=C03S1KBA2
Neither of those appear to take phone calls, no? I can only find big tablets, and the small one says "data only SIM", without mentioning "phones". > With the support of a data-only SIM, you can stay connected wherever the day takes you. With A-GPS and cellular data, you can find your way with ease β whether youβre in the heart of a bustling metropolis or exploring the remote countryside.
true, it's mostly for reading academic papers in a hammock
I can keep my remarkable, then βΊοΈ
Whatβs the battery life for the Minimal Phone like btw?
It lasts for two days if I don't look too much at it, one day if I do. So not exceptional, but not bad! I suspect "phone stuff" (mobile data, staying online) is as big of a battery drain as the screen.
Awesome, appreciate the insights. When my Pixel finally dies Iβll take the plunge into e-inks
Yay! π¦
Velutina or Mandarinia? Cause Mandarinia wasps are scary as π©
Velutina, the invasive species that are killing off honey bees.
I surely hope the mandarinia haven't made it to these parts π€
The bugger bit me (with its jaws).
(the abdomen was removed)
Guess we have to get rid of European honey bees. All Japanese bees from now on. At least they can kill off giant hornets by ganging up on them in a ball to overheat them. I suspect they can ball up the smaller bastards too. I just don't know how much honey they produce, as the colonies are just 1/10 the size.
no idea
I can tell that the asian hornets are very numerous this year. I installed two specific hornet traps an hour ago, caught one and spotted another one. The bees will have a hard time.
looks like a great bath! π I can just see the motion from the pictures. Great shots!
many visitors in the town pool!
Asian hornets are on the loose goddamnit. killed one yesterday, just saw another one at my window just now.
