time for some pre-breakfast hacking....

Morning

Spent the morning setting up a brand new Wi-Fi mesh network. My trusty old Airport Time Capsule finally gets relieved from Wi-Fi duty (I am still using it as a network drive).

The Time Capsule was such a good product. It's a shame that Apple abandoned it.

I still am using a Time Capsule

and its wifi

but let me know where I should upgrade to in case it dies... also for network backup

You just pair any modern router with a NAS. In fact, I believe you can plug an external HD or SSD into many routers and they will often support accessing it as a NAS. I will keep using my Time Capsule as a NAS for backup while it still works for me, despite it using an ancient and mostly unsupported version of Samba.

Can you use any modern NAS as a backup system for time capsule? What’s the reason they deprecated Airport Time Capsule?

Yes, I think so. Apple divested from the router business entirely a decade ago, not sure why. Maybe it wasn't bringing in enough money? But it matters not as the competition has long since caught up with Apple's UX, anyway.

nice. I wonder why Airport Time Capsule stops working with the next OS. but their Time Capsule over the wire does work with other NAS systems? it sounds weird to me

I'll have to upgrade some time anyway

Yes, Time Machine the software works with any NAS AFAIK.
