Good morning
Good Morning Europe!

Sneaky woodpecker.
Are the flock heading to Greenland ?
Nope, headed South. I think they're going to Ibiza.
Better choice atm
Usually true imho
morning
good morning
I saw this on Wikipedia for reasons: > The Lego Group's motto, "only the best is good enough" (Danish: det bedste er ikke for godt, literally "the best isn't excessively good") And it seems to me like "only the best is good enough" is quite different from "the best isn't excessively good". The former has a goal towards perfection. The latter has a goal towards being good enough. Any Danes want to weigh in?
to me the latter indicates that the best isn't too much to pursue
(I'm not a Dane)
as in, no one's going to tell you "it doesn't have to be perfect, it's good already" if you try to pursue the best
yes, the translation seems way off
I mean... they aren't too far off in my opinion
you say > The latter has a goal towards being good enough but IMO "isn't excessively good" means no one's going to say "it's good enough" until it's perfect
waiting for actual Danes to show up now π
hehe yeah
Yeah a better translation would be "the best isn't too good"
Or the best can't be too good
those are two very different things
I like "excessively" - "too good" in a negative phrase sometimes means the opposite
as in "this isn't too good" means this is bad
whereas "this isn't excessively good" tells me it is not better than beneficial
language is hard
(I'm not a native speaker of English and I know 0 Danish)
I'm a native English speaker but it's still hard π€
I'm native english and danish and it's hard
hehe you win ποΈ
The best can't be too good (could also be bad, the same as isn't)
But it's meant in a perfectionist sense in this case.
Or knowing the Danish psyche, don't worry about the best being too good, cause that's not possible.
ok, so, as usual, the literal wording is a bad start
the psyche brings the meaning!
I mean this is a country that was considered one of the happiest in the world because their expectation are so low.
the 1992 euro win was basically enough to keep several generations happy about the world.
Until trump invades greenland.
That will be a seismic move. Maybe Lego could β¦ block it π€ͺπ§±
Yeah, there's definitely some warmth/goodwill/hope to it.
I think the Danish one has shifted somewhat in meaning over time and the English one is the correct translation of the intended original meaning.
I've always found the Danish wording odd (being a Dane), but I believe it's about striving for perfection. Additionally, there's a connotation of goodwill associated with the intent towards perfection, in my mind; "Det bedste er ikke for godt til ham" -> we will give him the best that we can because he deserves it
Maybe best captured by being slightly less literal, like βthe best isn't too good to hope forβ ?
