Good morning!
it's melty out
I'm considering getting a walking pad to get some walking done while I work - in meetings, when thinking, when on the passive side of a pairing session, possibly while coding if I can get it to work. Any tips?
That reminds me of those 90s infomercials where a bunch of gym goers simulate office work while wearing some kind of device that continuously shocks the muscle so that they can "work out" while at work. I forget the product name. π
Something you strap on your thigh or bicep or stomach? I remember something like that
I prefer actual workouts and fresh air and such, but with practically no free time for working out, the $dayjob-time seems ripe for the taking.
@reefersleep We got a https://de.walkingpad.com/products/walkingpad-p1-klappbares-laufband-fur-schreibtisch for our Nuremberg office. Walk&Code works pretty well. We only use it for casual walking -- mostly to enter the zone quickly. A colleague in our Herzo office got a treadmill with incline, because she really cares about the training effect. If you care about the training effect, the incline matters. Some other things to care about: β’ Size in use -- some treadmills are e.g. too short for me. β’ Transportability β’ Size at rest β’ Noise! Even the more silent ones are pretty noisy. So, if you share your office, talk to your colleagues before. I guess you already have the corresponding height-adjustable desk?
@johannes.f.knauf thank you for chiming in π I am lucky to have a motorised desk in my home office, yes. I'm also lucky that my wife and son are out and about for most weekdays, and we don't share walls with anyone, so noise is hopefully not an issue. I think size will be a big issue, since it's already pretty cramped in here. I think the best storage option is upright, leaning against the wall. I'll have to take careful measurements. I don't think I need incline - I'm thinking I just want leisurely, long strolls. My big issue at the moment is that it's a somewhat big investment for our household income, and the .dk webshops that carry these things seem to be generally poorly rated. Ideally, I'd like a x-days guarantee where I can send it back (and expect to get my money back!) after having tried it properly. Haven't seen all shops yet, maybe there's something. Since I started my programming career, I've been having back issues. Periodically, my lower back hurts, and sometimes it's so immobilising that I can't walk normally. I'm trying to stand up more to combat it, and it seems to help, though not 100%. I've also been gaining weight since I started programming π Not a lot, and not fast, but it's there. I'm also hoping that steady every-day walking can help me here. (Yes yes, I know that what you do in the kitchen is more important than your training in this regard, but expending more calories can't be bad, is my thinking π)
We just had a massive explosion about 0.5KM from the office. We saw multiple fire-engines, 10 ambulances and 2 trauma helicopters landing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oy1T0tR_7uk
do they know how it occurred? gas explosion? bomb?
not yet
glad you're safe!
my wife worked home today instead of in Utrecht
We heard it and then saw the flames and all the policy etc.

aw man, glad youβre safe! That must have been terrifying
We were at a safe distance, so not bad for us. But bad for the people who live there
Only two victims. but several houses have been more or less destroyed.
looks bad
