Which black and white phone are you using and are you happy with it?

teodorlu 2025-12-24T12:17:01.610779Z

taken on my black and white phone, but the camera should capture a color or two.

tfw a library whose API you love has used assert everywhere 🙁

Uh-oh! Which library is that?

seancorfield 2025-12-24T15:16:48.170999Z

(I took all the assert calls out of next.jdbc a year ago and replaced them with proper, explicit checks that throw IllegalArgumentException, so I'm curious)

What's the problem with asserts in this case? That they are outside the usual exception hierarchy or something else?

2025-12-24T16:55:40.738019Z

There are very few places where assert makes sense, basically only when the thing that happened would put the system into an unrecoverable state (an error, not an exception), so it pains me when it's used for checking arguments. If I pass some bullshit to one of these functions, I want to be able to catch the exception and take defensive action at the next layer up…

We just watched A Charlie Brown Christmas, and now we're watching Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Then it'll be the Grinch (the original).
