Apple, wtf... I want my computer to look like the matrix, not like a candy shop FFS
Is that the new "glass" design?
unfortunately, yes
Sounds like you need Linux + hyperland not OSX π
There are articles on how to disable the glass design. I think it's been generally poorly received.
Itβs not even the design itself I hate (I merely dislike it), but the fact that any pre-Apple Silicon laptop seems unable to run it
itβs a laggy mess
@ben.sless absolutely, I'm messing with omarchy on a frw13 for my side projects, work laptop is a mbp
omarchy does look interesting
mutters something about how this Apple customer, loyal since 1992, switched to Windows a few years back due to Apple's increasingly user- and developer-hostile approach to so many things
@seancorfield I'm hearing similar complaints about windows lately π (I'm not loyal to any OS, just use what I have to or is most convenient for the task)
Most of the "Windows haters" I see online don't even use Windows, they just like to dunk on it π I live and die in WSL2/Ubuntu anyway. Just VS Code and a few "comms" apps on the Windows side.
Ads and irrelevant web search in the start menu. Intrusive programs. Yuck
Ads? You mean the two small pieces of text that appear sometimes on the lock screen?
In the start menu, you get ads by default and in the search results when you search for something in your computer, like, Terminal
Ads, telemetry, and Microsoft trying to (force)push users to log in with Microsoft accounts are what I mostly hear
"what I mostly hear"
And the "ads" in the Start menu are probably these hints and tips (that you can easily disable, as I have):
If y'all are more comfortable running Linux on the desktop, that's great. I just don't find the Linux UI/UX to be all that great and I still prefer the Windows (or macOS) UI for the non-dev programs I use.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not arguing against Windows, it's just that I spend too little time in it these days (turn on computer, launch game, shut down) to have any firm opinions on recent changes. My home computers all have it but outside of work I just don't have much time for computers. Do you use a MS account with it? If yes, any up/downsides you found vs local-only accounts?
(I'm still angry at MS for not allowing my reasonably powerful 2016 desktop to upgrade to win11 without hardware changes though)
I've used a HotMail account with Windows stuff for... 15 years I guess? (I started buying Windows laptops years before I abandoned macOS desktops) I like that it can sync a bunch of stuff between multiple machines -- and my browser stuff between my computers and my phone.
No downsides that I can recall. ISTR always using an icloud account with my Macs for many years too.
I got angry with Apple for forcing me to buy a new machine every "few" years, as it stopped making upgrades available to older machines and various programs I used stopped supporting older O/S versions π
I've been on Insiders builds of Windows since... 8.1 came out, I think? So what I run is often 6-9 months ahead of consumer releases.
> browser stuff between my computers and my phone As in web browser?
Yup. Passwords, form data. Same as using Chrome with a Google account.
Gotcha. Are you on Edge, then?
Edge on everything, yes. It's Chromium under the hood and I prefer Microsoft's customizations/integrations, for example with Copilot π
Yeah not too much difference in engine. Thanks for the insight! It's about time I put some effort into sorting out the home computer situation.
