Apple, wtf... I want my computer to look like the matrix, not like a candy shop FFS

seancorfield 2025-11-26T19:47:28.988039Z

Is that the new "glass" design?

Thomas Moerman 2025-11-26T19:50:10.851979Z

unfortunately, yes

Ben Sless 2025-11-27T04:27:32.246369Z

Sounds like you need Linux + hyperland not OSX πŸ˜‰

reefersleep 2025-11-27T06:34:55.256869Z

There are articles on how to disable the glass design. I think it's been generally poorly received.

simongray 2025-11-27T08:42:24.775049Z

It’s not even the design itself I hate (I merely dislike it), but the fact that any pre-Apple Silicon laptop seems unable to run it

simongray 2025-11-27T08:42:35.257539Z

it’s a laggy mess

Thomas Moerman 2025-11-27T09:07:26.025389Z

@ben.sless absolutely, I'm messing with omarchy on a frw13 for my side projects, work laptop is a mbp

imre 2025-11-27T12:24:01.184679Z

omarchy does look interesting

seancorfield 2025-11-27T14:13:46.463239Z

mutters something about how this Apple customer, loyal since 1992, switched to Windows a few years back due to Apple's increasingly user- and developer-hostile approach to so many things

imre 2025-11-27T14:16:09.481709Z

@seancorfield I'm hearing similar complaints about windows lately πŸ˜… (I'm not loyal to any OS, just use what I have to or is most convenient for the task)

seancorfield 2025-11-27T14:20:24.342949Z

Most of the "Windows haters" I see online don't even use Windows, they just like to dunk on it πŸ™‚ I live and die in WSL2/Ubuntu anyway. Just VS Code and a few "comms" apps on the Windows side.

Ben Sless 2025-11-27T14:22:08.437099Z

Ads and irrelevant web search in the start menu. Intrusive programs. Yuck

seancorfield 2025-11-27T14:23:41.570029Z

Ads? You mean the two small pieces of text that appear sometimes on the lock screen?

Ben Sless 2025-11-27T14:30:10.153049Z

In the start menu, you get ads by default and in the search results when you search for something in your computer, like, Terminal

imre 2025-11-27T14:35:04.953839Z

Ads, telemetry, and Microsoft trying to (force)push users to log in with Microsoft accounts are what I mostly hear

seancorfield 2025-11-27T14:42:14.935739Z

"what I mostly hear"

seancorfield 2025-11-27T14:43:50.655189Z

And the "ads" in the Start menu are probably these hints and tips (that you can easily disable, as I have):

seancorfield 2025-11-27T14:46:48.977519Z

If y'all are more comfortable running Linux on the desktop, that's great. I just don't find the Linux UI/UX to be all that great and I still prefer the Windows (or macOS) UI for the non-dev programs I use.

imre 2025-11-27T14:53:47.732589Z

Don't get me wrong, I'm not arguing against Windows, it's just that I spend too little time in it these days (turn on computer, launch game, shut down) to have any firm opinions on recent changes. My home computers all have it but outside of work I just don't have much time for computers. Do you use a MS account with it? If yes, any up/downsides you found vs local-only accounts?

imre 2025-11-27T14:56:18.687659Z

(I'm still angry at MS for not allowing my reasonably powerful 2016 desktop to upgrade to win11 without hardware changes though)

seancorfield 2025-11-27T14:57:41.591699Z

I've used a HotMail account with Windows stuff for... 15 years I guess? (I started buying Windows laptops years before I abandoned macOS desktops) I like that it can sync a bunch of stuff between multiple machines -- and my browser stuff between my computers and my phone.

seancorfield 2025-11-27T14:58:12.802519Z

No downsides that I can recall. ISTR always using an icloud account with my Macs for many years too.

seancorfield 2025-11-27T14:59:22.422119Z

I got angry with Apple for forcing me to buy a new machine every "few" years, as it stopped making upgrades available to older machines and various programs I used stopped supporting older O/S versions 😞

I've been on Insiders builds of Windows since... 8.1 came out, I think? So what I run is often 6-9 months ahead of consumer releases.

imre 2025-11-27T15:01:50.852249Z

> browser stuff between my computers and my phone As in web browser?

seancorfield 2025-11-27T15:02:28.325089Z

Yup. Passwords, form data. Same as using Chrome with a Google account.

imre 2025-11-27T15:02:57.585529Z

Gotcha. Are you on Edge, then?

seancorfield 2025-11-27T15:04:12.632189Z

Edge on everything, yes. It's Chromium under the hood and I prefer Microsoft's customizations/integrations, for example with Copilot πŸ™‚

imre 2025-11-27T15:05:53.547189Z

Yeah not too much difference in engine. Thanks for the insight! It's about time I put some effort into sorting out the home computer situation.
