Morning! Poleaxed so many naked snails I lost count. Nasty buggers eatin' all my flowers.
FYI: In English there is a difference between slugs and snails. One is naked the other isn't (and I can never remember which is which).
the slug is naked and the snail has a house
but how do you remember that?
"slug" has a strong connotation of slimy and unpleasant. one could call a particularly creepy man who does bad things a slug. snail just feels like any animal-like creature.
oh TIL, thanks thomas! And I already know how to remember it: a slug is also a projectile for a shotgun. A snail would get stuck.
not sure if that's helpful lol. reminds me of how i remember noun genders in german or french. "uhhh because a weekend feels neutral"
I stand corrected. They're slugs. The invasive naked red ones.
aah and the black ones are the native ones?
slugs are lazy. snails are slow. It is obvious and logical just like everything else in English. /s
yeah right... now I do get it! Thank you @otfrom
logic always helps when learning languages
that applies to every single language except English đ
Don't think i can distinguish the native ones vs. the invasive one... all i know is there are too many of them, a nightmare when you're trying to grow some flowers. Especially given the abundant rain of the last months. Last year we had majestic digitalis flowers, this year they haven't made it past 10cm off the ground, mowed clean by slugs.
there have been a lot this year, very true
I used to go out and hunt them at dusk, killing about 30-50 of them per session, but I've given up.
this morning they were all out in the open because of the rain
Last weekend the kids found a dead mouse. Half a day later the corpse was eaten clean by the slugs, leaving only the skeleton covered in slime. These things are eating-machines.
bizarre, I hadn't realised they were omnivores.
I recall a time when I was visiting Italy and a particular town had a festival where they eat slugs (smoothered in tomato sauce). These were not your ordinary garden variety - they were massive! The largest I've ever seen in my life. I tasted one. I never ever want to experience that again...even with all the tomato sauce it was vile!
oh man I love eating snails in the french style, smothered in garlic butter with some bread
I never tried them
I tried snails too. Once. Never again.
slugs don't cross over sheep wool, some gardener said in a TV show. Maybe that helps keeping them away from some plants.
Oooh
that's very interesting. My wife would like to know that. She's in a constant war with them.
I'll mention that to her
how strange, considering they can cross a razor blade...

Is there such a thing as a tool that enables on-screen ad hoc OCR? Often, I'm on video meetings where someone is screen sharing something that I'd like to look up myself, but they haven't shared the URL or the ticket number or whatever in the chat. I have to visually note the text and jot it down in my browser (text editor or whatever). I'm thinking, why isn't there a small app that lets me select part of my screen, automagically retrieve the text and put it into my paste buffer?
Screenshots? I am not sure, but at least on iOS you can select text in images
I had a vague recollection that you could do something like that, but then, that's several steps, right?
First you have to turn whatever you're looking at into an image and get it into Preview, then do the text selection and discard the image and close Preview. With shottr, I invoke a keyboard shortcut and select the area on my screen to copy text from, done. Feels like magic!
Sometimes you get away with the built-in stuff.
Great! Love it when there's a built in option. I've been using the screenshot snippet functionality and screen recording with the built in Quicktime Player for ages, and been very satisfied. Thanks for the demonstration â¤ď¸
Thanks for sharing about shottr! â¤ď¸ Have been missing a way to quickly annotate screenshots.
For good measure, a little demo (also for anyone else looking a the thread):
Oh I haven't even begun delving into what else it can do, looking forward to it đ
Now to find a free alternative... đ
Here we go! https://shottr.cc/ First attempt seems promising, yay! Thank you for rubber ducking this research.
