I'm enjoying all this 0 carbon electricity in Northern Scotland https://carbonintensity.org.uk/ Need more wind turbines

My wife has been having a tough time during her ongoing maternity leave with our daughter, so Iâve secretly bought her the latest iPhone and it will be arriving today đ she has a really old iPhone right now (says she doesnât want to waste money when itâs still working), but she also keeps saying she doesnât like the quality of the photos it takes, so I think she will be OK with me âwastingâ that money on her đ

I'm considering doing the same for my wife. She has an old iPhone SE but it's getting slow. She doesn't want to spend money on a new one but also doesn't want a bigger phone, still wants an iPhone. Small iPhones are killed now though, so perhaps I better just buy her a new 13 mini while it's still available
I couldn't keep it a secret, my wife and I are very open and I needed to know which color she liked best (I would have guessed it right though)
My wife's talking about trading her XS in for a 15... but we certainly don't need to spend the money... đ
Bought the 13 mini for my wife which I also have, we both like small phones, but there won't be any small iPhones going forward... so we'll be good for another 5 years hopefully
I held onto my 5 for years because I didn't want a "big" phone. Jay upgraded to the XS and I thought it was ridiculously big! Then I decided to switched from iPhone to Android and ended up with a OnePlus 7 T Pro McClaren ... which was even bigger than her XS! But I absolutely love it, and wished I'd switched to an Android years early đ
@U04V15CAJ I always thought her name was lalage - most online people I know, I only know them by their internet monikers đ
But Iâm also the type of person who is not great at buying small tokens of appreciation (and she is pretty good at it), so it also feels a bit like repaying a debt đ
What conferences in Europe might you deem suited to reach out to a mostly non-Clojure audience that might appreciate babashka scripting? I'd reckon JVM folks might like it because they can use most of the JVM in scripting, they just don't now that Clojure is the best language for scripting yet :)
Iâd recommend JavaLand, as there were Clojure slots and even a Babashka slot in the last years, but they donât pay for accommodation and the conference hotel on site is really expensive :/
I am so out of touch with the conference scene in general and Europe in particular that I have no useful thoughts, but I am commenting to get the traffic / ideas from others đ
@U0N9SJHCH "Contribute to the program! The Call for Papers is open until September 19." Well, fuck that. It happens to me every time I hear about a conference and have mustered up some energy to reach out to non-Clojure folks again ;)
Ah damn, sorry, did not have that on my radar đ
I could even just go there early in the morning and leave for my own bed at night ;)
For German Java conferences, the ones by the Java Usergroups are usually nice and quite diverse. JavaForum Nord (Hannover) comes to mind. In the Netherlands there is J-Fall (also CfP recently closed)
Yes, JFall :( I should have had this on my radar too, damnit. CfP just closed a few days before I noticed
This is a good overview I got from Alina (GraalVM devrel): https://github.com/javaconferences/javaconferences.github.io
@U0N9SJHCH is http://jax.de any good?
Iâm speaking there regularly since 2019, but the last time they did not provide vegetarian food next to potatoes and salad, and their speaker lineup lacks diversity đ Their version in munich, W-JAX has 4 women for 150 sessions this year. Not speaking there, but if it is as bad the next time at JAX wonât be going back
@U04V15CAJ JavaLand just extended their CfP
Morning, quick question: if today you would like to start the development of a mobile app, would you rather go with ClojureDart or the good old react-native? (An utility app, no fancy graphics involved).
I would use React Native, but only because I am lazy and havenât tried much Flutter yet. And not sure if ClojureDart has a REPL yet?
It depends on how mission-critical the app is and how soon it needs to be done. React Native is much more mature, but ClojureDart probably more fun and possibly the better option long-term.
Not really mission critical, and as @U0ETXRFEW reminds me, ClojureDart does not have REPL support yet... :thinking_face:
Since we switched from React Native to ClojureDart, our app developer is much happier and we spend less time resolving dependency issues
@U0N9SJHCH nice to know, thanks
My experience with ReactNative is that you have to keep working on the app and keep the dependencies up to date on a very regular basis, as breaking changes are the norm. Don't expect to be able to update a ReactNative app that has gone untouched for a year without major headaches. I don't know how the ReactNative + Clojurescript story is though, it might be better. đ€· Also, I don't know ClojureDart. Maybe my opinion is just not very relevant, but you have it now. đ
@U0522J5HN I'll keep that in mind, thanks!
what's the clojuredart live reloading like ? RN+cljs+helix was very good
