Morning!

Good morning 🙂

Good Morning!

dharrigan08:02:25

Kids are amazing. Had to pick up kid from school yesterday morning, had a temperature. He was okay at home, then crashed about dinner time - slept all the way through until this morning. Now he's 100% back to himself and dancing around the place!

😅 14
reefersleep08:02:13

That really is awesome 💪

reefersleep08:02:57

I can’t count the number of times that my son has fallen directly on his head, cried violently for 10 seconds, then moved on

reefersleep08:02:23

I used to think that the “kids are resilient” referred more to their state of mind, like them being too busy to be sorry for themselves. It might also be that, but also, their bodies certainly are more rubbery, I’ve learned recently. The knees (knee caps) aren’t fully developed until they’re 6 months or so? And some cranial structures also remain malleable for quite some time.

reefersleep08:02:00

It really is interesting!

dharrigan08:02:25

Natch he's back to school 🙂

dharrigan08:02:43

Fit enough to dance around the room, fit enough to learn his 3 R's at school 🙂

dharrigan08:02:20

Reading, Writing and Arithmetic.

lemontea15:02:22

@U4P4NREBY wait… Cartoon Physics?!

lemontea15:02:38

(but ya, I agree it’s a superpower)

dharrigan08:02:32

I wish I had that resiliancy 🙂

Handling the new cargo bike went slightly better this morning, but I guess I need to get used to used to a new reality of comments from mildly road-raging regular riders stuck behind my slow and careful movements… :man-shrugging: And it probably wasn’t the best idea to take it ~12 km across the centre of Copenhagen on its maiden voyage while it’s getting dark outside… I honestly had a little trouble falling asleep last night because it was so scary 😅

🦾 8
reefersleep08:02:58

😮 I’ve also thought the traffic in Copenhagen scary/agitating at times, even on a normal bike with no impediments

reefersleep08:02:43

Every time I witness people act irrational or dumb in traffic, I get a bit agitated. Not angry, necessarily, more like a general heightened state of anxiety. Even if what they did didn’t impact me in any way. I think I’m a bit “sensitive”.

simongray08:02:46

I’m so used to it, so I probably don’t notice. On a regular bike I always know exactly how much space I have/need and I know my own reaction time well. It is totally different on these massive bikes.

simongray08:02:39

yeah, some idiot tried to pass me yesterday and clearly didn’t have any room to do so, so he nearly crashed into parked car instead. This was in Frederiksberg on Gammel Kongevej, which is probably the most narrow bikelane in the city. Moron.

reefersleep08:02:16

hahaha yeah, that’s not my favourite lane, either

reefersleep08:02:36

Think I’ve chosen Frederiksberg Allé as an alternative at times, decently wide, relaxed and picturesque

simongray08:02:47

good strategy!

ordnungswidrig08:02:38

Bike traffic CPH scared me. People will yell at you in rush hour when you go to slow, which is may less than 20km/h 😆 Or they're just yelling at those slow tourists.

ordnungswidrig09:02:19

"People generally yell" - would be very german.

ordnungswidrig09:02:11

"Hey, Sie da! Das geht so aber nicht!

😂 4
☝️ 2
simongray09:02:50

same in Copenhagen

simongray09:02:28

I yell at people if they blatantly break the rules in some manner that makes life more dangerous for me or other people, but otherwise I just ring the bell if people are in my way

simongray09:02:49

I ring my bell A LOT 😁

ordnungswidrig09:02:38

But in general I was impressed by the speed of the average commuter in Kopenhagen. In my town I'm scared by the average speed of the seniors on their e-bikes which apparently have no brakes :see:

simongray09:02:14

yeah, people ride very fast here, fast than in NL or other places with many bikes

borkdude09:02:08

I live along a long bike road and people go fast here due to the electrification of bikes. Sometimes it's really confusing how fast someone approaches when you want to cross

simongray09:02:57

because grandma is pedalling like she’s going 5km/hour, but her assist is maxed out

simongray09:02:06

so she’s actually going 25

ordnungswidrig09:02:22

Thanks to home office I only need to leave my home for shopping, but as a family of 6 it's hardly doable by bike. This is why I have a huge bus 🚐 😛

borkdude09:02:56

There's people going 25 or faster here but not wearing helmets. NL people aren't used to wear helmets on bikes and very stubborn about it

ordnungswidrig09:02:06

Uuuuh, that's nasty.

ordnungswidrig09:02:40

ER surgeons like those people.

simongray09:02:46

thankfully, helmet usage is going way up in Copenhagen along with faster riding. More than half are wearing them now.

ordnungswidrig09:02:49

Nice. I think in germany the vast majority of people wear helmets nowadays. Maybe also because in primary school we do bike education, including tests on these "fake road" practice areas. The training is done by the local police and helmets are mandatory.

ordnungswidrig09:02:05

Students even get graded on that.

simongray09:02:22

hah, so German

ordnungswidrig09:02:09

On the other hand, more teenagers smoke, since recent years. Choose your poison, I guess.

simongray09:02:14

@U04V15CAJ that two-way lane is chef’s kiss

simongray09:02:40

the infrastructure in NL is next-level

ordnungswidrig09:02:13

NL is always mentioned as the role model for bike friendly cities. And then, after all, nothing is done in germany :-p

simongray09:02:08

It’s done on a national level in NL according to the same set of evolved standards. Other countries plan it much more locally and aren’t as long-term about it. NL is showing the way forward, but no one is really listening.

borkdude09:02:32

NL has been at it from the 70ies

borkdude09:02:49

due to protests by people who were fed up by cars taking up all the cities

simongray09:02:47

Copenhagen has always been a bike city, but the infrastructure only started being built for it in the 70s and onwards due to the oil crisis

simongray09:02:08

the rest of the country generally lags behind Copenhagen and Copenhagen lags behind NL

ordnungswidrig09:02:56

The rural roads in Denmark are not even car friendly according to my experience :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing:

2
simongray09:02:12

I wouldn’t know, I hardly ever leave Copenhagen 😛

reefersleep09:02:51

True that. There's only one road leaving my housing area, and it has no bike path or even pedestrian path, and there's a raised separator in the middle of the two car lanes so cars can't even cross lanes to pass bikes, they have to stay behind bikers, which is really menacing for the biker

picard-facepalm 4
reefersleep09:02:55

I hope they change it when they add a 1000 (or whatever) people's worth of housing more to the area in the coming years

mdiin09:02:20

I would say most of Aarhus is pretty well suited for biking as well as Copenhagen. 🙂

mdiin09:02:27

Lots of cargo bikes here as well, mine included. 😄

simongray10:02:37

How do you deal with going up and down ramps, @U0522J5HN? It’s so difficult to do at an angle. Does it get better?

mdiin10:02:06

I’m riding a https://www.larryvsharry.com/, so two-wheeler like the Urban Arrow, so I don’t really have the same issue there.

🆒 2
mdiin10:02:05

But I’m guessing it will become second nature pretty quickly for you. Your muscle memory will handle the angles for you.

simongray10:02:34

ah yeah it must be easier on a two-wheeler

orestis16:02:30

You got me jealous with all this discussion about bike lanes. In Athens there’s hardly any bike lanes and the ones created are empty because they’re disconnected from each other.

reefersleep18:02:59

Ah, that sucks. Not very conducive towards getting more people on bikes.
