good morning folks

reefersleep11:01:55

Good morning my dudes!

reefersleep12:01:18

I work from home where my girlfriend also is a stay-at-home mom, and I swear, sometimes I feel like she’s taking care of a Nazgûl from the sounds of the (mostly random) shrieks of my son. I’ve got the easy job 😅

mdiin12:01:47

Ah yes, children. Cute when asleep, and then they wake up. 😂

mdiin12:01:42

I’m past the Nazgul stage, but I remember it vividly.

reefersleep12:01:33

My son is only 2 and I’m already having trouble remembering all of the different development traits he’s exhibited. Like, I know that he’s not always been shrieking on encountering some obstacle, but it feels like it has, and it’s certainly been more than 2 weeks… But has it been 2 months or more? He didn’t do it when he was just 1 year old… I think? Also, he used not to care that much about what was happening around him, and now he’s got opinions about everything. When did that change? Was it gradual? This is how I know that the grandparents’ accounts of how things were when my gf and I were children are faulty 🙂 “You never used to cry like that!” “Eating at the table was never really troublesome for us, no” Yeah, I bet…

Totally agree, the past just starts slipping and changing subtly.

lemontea15:01:54

and from the child’s perspective… isn’t it that pre-lingual memory will become inaccessible to him himself after age of 3 or something

lemontea15:01:26

(so if you want to take video recording of important moment so that it is not lost forever to the stream of time, go for it)

reefersleep16:01:55

We try, but there are never sufficient recordings. Sometimes it's the subtlest of things that you wish you could remember, happening in the dark, or at an impossible angle, or at an inopportune time

mccraigmccraig07:01:06

i don't even remember any nazgûl stage... did it even happen ?

reefersleep08:01:26

@U0524B4UW the kids are not very helpful in that regard, either. Since becoming a parent, I’ve learnt that children are already individuals at birth; time and time again, we’ve been frustrated that our son did not fit into some box or pattern that, apparently, most other children do. For one, I think he’s more of an instant shrieker than most children 🦅

mccraigmccraig08:01:20

@U0AQ3HP9U yeah, that realization really hit me with kid#2 and again with kid#3...

reefersleep09:01:16

The next one better be different in terms of being easier

reefersleep09:01:38

or they can have my resignation

Grandparents (in my case) were also much more strict, most times inappropriately so (developmental milestones wise, you can’t just ask children to behave like adults). It definitely leads to terrorized children that will learn to not annoy the grown ups.

We certainly are doing things differently than our parents, @U7PBP4UVA. At least, I hope so! At times, it can be hard not to regress to old patterns.

reefersleep19:01:09

Also, the approach we're taking - which we hope to be the best for our kid - requires a bit more patience than we had from the outset. We try to get better every day, and every day, it's a struggle 😓 Hopefully it gets easier, and hopefully, it'll be good for our boy overall.

reefersleep12:01:47

Finally got around to watching “Stop Writing Dead Programs” by Jack Rusher (Strange Loop 2022) - inspiring stuff!

I wonder if the Streaming Tickets for the Conj mean that the recordings won’t be put on Youtube? :face_with_monocle:

thomas13:01:24

maybe streaming is for people who can't wait?

thomas13:01:42

as not putting them on YT (eventually) would be a miss IMHO

and I somehow vaguely remember reading somewhere that Rich was going to announce something?

I could be wrong though...

reefersleep14:01:11

Says in the invite mail I got that > Rich Hickey, the creator of Clojure, will present a talk as well.

thomas14:01:12

that might well be what I have seen
