Morning y'all! I'm going to change my laptop, my 8gb RAM shows its limits when running Clojure + ClojureScript projects. Any recommendations for a good spec? Macbook m1 look interesting, but I like to work on Linux. Which laptop do you using with satisfaction? :-)

borkdude10:11:14

I went from a Macbook Pro 2019 32gb to a Macbook Air 2020 16gb M1. Guess which one is faster ;)

borkdude10:11:29

But not using linux on that

the new air is the best laptop I ever owned

for laptops I've been very happy with Dell XPS 13s. I know some people like the Lenovo X1s

otfrom10:11:02

both work well with Linux, the Dell's can come w/linux installed usually

I have the same setup as @borkdude. I love the fact that the Apple Silicon Macbook Air is fanless and still super fast.

Meaning, I use the former as my work computer and the latter as my personal machine.

I want a bit more screen real estate so am using a Macbook Pro M1 (Max even, because my employer lets me buy pretty much whatever I want 😄). It is not fanless, but in the year or so I've been using it , the fans have only run twice. Fantastic hardware. And macOS is sweetly married to it, making the combo awesome. And stable. I pretty much only restart the computer when applying OS updates.

borkdude12:11:37

I've bought a LG 5k 27" monitor to compensate for the 13" screen ;)

borkdude12:11:01

I like that the air is super light too, perfect travel companion

I have the maxed MBA too chef_kiss I also have a Ryzen 9 desktop that runs Linux and I use Synergy as a virtual KVM between the two.

genRaiy12:11:50

I have 40" 5K monitor because :man-shrugging::skin-tone-3:

borkdude12:11:19

I have also a PC with 128GB memory + Ryzen 9 and Windows + WSL2 (specs https://tweakers.net/gallery/32885/inventaris/). It allows me to test software on any platform together with my laptops.

We live in a delightful neighbourhood but on the odd day it can provide a strange vista. Very much like Clojure 😝

For over a week, I’ve been on my iPad with blink + mosh + cheapo Hetzner Linux machine with 256G RAM. Pretty good setup for working on Clojure(Script) project with 8+ repls

any pointers how to setup something like this? (I know about the cheapo hetzner part 😜)

vijaykiran10:11:42

🙂 It was pretty easy

vijaykiran10:11:26

https://blink.shhttps://mosh.org And rest was just ssh into the server and install whatever is needed. Blink has nice support for keyboard and setting up ssh keys

I use snap for installing edge/beta emacs - instead of compiling, and pretty much moved all my dotfiles from mac to remote Ubuntu Linux machine

Thanks y'all for your suggestions, very interesting! 👍

I went from various iterations of xps13 to a mb-pro recently, I have to say I am pleasantly surprised
