Good morning! Felt a sudden rejuvenation yesterday afternoon, a sudden, unexplained lift in my mood that lasted the rest of the day. Can’t point at what caused it, exactly, it was a day like any other.
Has me thinking (again) that perhaps my “base mood” is a bit low compared to other people’s…
ya hedonic treadmill etc… seems there’s variation (genetic?) in the base-line mood as you said. Try some mood elevation technique?
I think there’s actually some interesting conflict in what you’re saying. I’ve definitely been overusing “quick joys” for a looooong period of time - Hacker News, Reddit, imgur, Tiktok, even eating candy and things like that. From what I understand, doing stuff like that is addictive; you get to crave those quick highs, it takes more to get there, and you feel less comfortable in your base mood. In line with this, it’s probably a good idea to lessen the use of such “mood elevations” 🙂 The idea being that it’s generally healthier to be more comfortable in your base mood, as well as lowering the “high highs” so that smaller events will seem more significant in heightening the mood. That being said, I feel like my life could be improved if my overall base mood was lifted a bit, and that was maybe what you were really hinting at. And yeah, I should look up techniques for that. Sometimes I feel like it’s a hormonal thing; I’ve felt a bit “joy stunted” for all of my adult life.
ya you nailed it. Happiness is a complicated things, and usually a direct approach will fail miserably
and although it’d an over-simplification (distortion?), addiction - dopamine vs ? - oxytocin
OTOH - if there are legitimate cause for you to be unhappy and not just “mood”, then don’t ignore the signal
Can be hard to tell, eh 🙂 But my mood has been pretty “muted” for many years, so it doesn’t seem like it’s an outside force. I should probably journal my mood to get a better understanding.
I can relate to how you feel.
Do you have any tips, @USDPTD3FY?
I find myself overindulging and it leads me to need to quit things that have become compulsive for me. So far in my life I have quit video games, reddit, twitter, youtube, I quit logging into social media after 10 PM, and etc. All these things had become compulsive behaviors so I simply needed to quit them to help give myself a chance to live free. Everyone is different and this will probably seem strange to some folks. I don't have any magic answers about how to feel happier, I have some experience cutting out things that made me unhappy and that has helped quite a bit. I also avoid gloomy and gory TV because it affects my mood too much. I'm very influenced by what I watch and read so I'm a little careful in that way. This is all just what works for me and I don't intend this as a recommendation or a prescription.
I am not a psychologist, but in the off chance - check this out? https://hsperson.com/ tl;dr HSP is a gift… but it does require special arrangement compared to other people
I'd love to find some diagnosis that fits me 🤓
a recurring joke between me and my personal friend: “feeling down? move to a spot with more sunshine… ar happier now!”

morning! I'm on day 1 of electric bed coding (had originally purchased it for my dad). Damn, I feel on a ☁️
is this like: I went to Retina and now all other screens look like sh_t? :)
@U45T93RA6 I mean: as soon as you get used to this, and stay in a hotel or whatever, all other beds feel way worse ;)
I very likely will still sleep on my usual bed (or will leave the bed in a horizontal angle)
its use case is leaving it tilted, somewhere between lying down and sitting position So the pelvis doesn't stretch as much (sitting = 90°), and you're not fighting gravity either
