Happy summer solstice!

RAMart05:06:56

↪️ ☀️

dharrigan07:06:45

Is it just me, or is half the interweb down?

dharrigan07:06:28

i.e., shows a 500

otfrom07:06:53

Cloudflare is down

otfrom07:06:26

Happy astronomical summer

dharrigan07:06:12

yeah, cloudunflare

dharrigan07:06:41

A long time ago (now) I actually went to Stonehenge during the summer solstice.

Stayed up all night and partied all night

dharrigan07:06:13

An experience for sure.

dharrigan08:06:10

There were lots of interesting folk around 🙂

simongray08:06:39

You mean Asatru or whatever your equivalent is?

dharrigan08:06:08

Oh lots and lots of said folk and kin.

Ben Sless08:06:35

Merry solstice!

simongray08:06:40

Cloudflare… a darling of HN. I do not get the hype.

simongray08:06:39

Just another American company basket people want throw all their eggs into.

xbrln19:06:39

Hey 🙂 do u have some alternatives in mind ?

simongray08:06:26

> <rant> Creating a monoculture is stifling in the long term, yet developers walk right in to it because of convenience. At some point the issue with Cloudflare won’t just be the centralisation itself (like now), it will be rent-seeking behaviour due to its eventual monopoly. </rant>

cough AWS cough

simongray09:06:45

yes, agree very much. At my old job, we were making a web app that was to be used by 600 people + a bit of simple machine learning (decision tree) and it cost us 1 million Danish kroner (so 135K EURO) a month in AWS expenses to keep the system running while it was being developed… it wasn’t even being used by those 600 people. Completely ridiculous.

orestis07:06:22

WAT - how did you arrive at that bill?

simongray08:06:08

In related news, I have been reading up on the IndieWeb and its associated standards and I think I will try to implement some of them in Clojure. They’re just simple data exchanges, so Clojure seems like an obvious choice.

otfrom08:06:13

Do I already follow you on Mastodon? [email protected]

simongray08:06:26

Likely not. I only just created a profile ~2 days ago: [email protected] (following you now)

simongray08:06:00

I’m considering making an over-engineered, protocol-heavy web identity/blogging platform.

simongray08:06:58

Or not considering, really… I started making it already…

simongray09:06:19

not public yet… 🙂 I will implement my own blog first and work out the kinks, but I am reusing some ideas I used in a different project which worked well there and I think they will work well here too.

simongray09:06:03

for now I’m testing things out, e.g. web sign-in https://simon.grays.blog

simongray09:06:39

Still not sure whether simon.grays.place or http://simon.grays.blog is the better domain.

Rachel Westmacott12:06:02

Do let us know if / when you make anything public

it's the year hump!

val_waeselynck14:06:34

Morning! Here's what happens when I spend too much time obsessing over the seasonal variation of day lengths 😛 : https://vvvvalvalval.github.io/posts/2019-12-03-inferring-earth-tilt-from-day-lengths.html#Physical-Model
