Good morning! Having a cold is the worst 🤧

otfrom16:11:44

hope you feel better soon

slipset16:11:53

Got my new m1pro today. Everything but the frontend is up and running smoothely.

(frontend doesn't seem to like the newest version of node, which is somewhat mindblowing or ironic or something)

borkdude16:11:05

@slipset care to share your specs? 14/16", memory?

slipset16:11:35

14" top M1Pro (didn't bother with the Max) 32GB mem

slipset16:11:56

To me, the only reason to go M1Max would be to get 64GB mem

slipset16:11:23

the 14" feels slightly bigger than my 13" mbpro, but not by a lot. Have installed all the things, got my repl up, running docker, haven't heard the fans spin at all and still haven't plugged it in for charging. My 13" would have needed two recharges by now 🙂

borkdude16:11:12

Do you attach it to a screen during work, I guess so?

otfrom16:11:50

@slipset docker works on M1s now?

slipset16:11:18

@borkdude yeah, I got the smaller one, since I'll be hooking it up to a screen for serious work, but want it to be portable.

slipset17:11:10

@otfrom there is some Rosetta trickery involved, but docker told me what I needed to install.

borkdude17:11:27

I'm also using Dropbox...

otfrom17:11:48

hmm... rosetta slowing things down doesn't sound great as I'd want docker for running python/R and doing some data science

dharrigan17:11:48

The translation using rosetta2 has been subjectively shown to be quicker than native code in many cases due to the efficiency of the m1 chip.

A lot of us at work use m1s (not me, I'm an arch fanboi) with docker and no-one has reported any preceived slowdown of docker

dharrigan17:11:03

in fact, most people have been very surpised at how cool and efficient the m1 works, and it sounding less like a busy airport runway for intel chipsets

orestis19:11:02

Speaking of Docker, are there plausible alternatives out there for Mac desktop use? I have a vague understanding that there's standards now but not sure what do they cover. I've managed to avoid Docker entirely up to now but it seems like a losing battle.

orestis19:11:38

I mean, I know of Podman/Buildah, and I found some references to jib for building Java-based images.

Good morning!
