Just set up a new macbook yesterday. Was expecting at least some issues to crop up, but nearly all of the applications I use had ARM versions (I guess Docker is the real joker - haven’t done any Docker stuff on it yet). Clojure, Intellij and JDK 17 are all running smoothly . I recommend spilling coffee into your laptop and having insurance cover it all.

what spec did you get @U4P4NREBY?

mccraigmccraig08:11:45

good to hear that clj is all smooth - i was wondering

simongray08:11:24

I got the Macbook Air M1 (8 core GPU, 512 SSD, 16GB RAM) since insurance basically wanted to cover an “identical” setup to the one I had before (except that was a 2018 Macbook Air with a shitty keyboard and processor 😛). I also think the Macbook Air is by far the best value Apple has on offer right now.

borkdude09:11:57

Is this your work laptop?

mccraigmccraig09:11:01

yep - the price on those mbairs is very keen

simongray09:11:49

@U04V15CAJ Nope, just my personal one. I have the 2019 model, 16 inch, i9 Macbook Pro for work, but this fanless laptop is actually faster than that 😂

borkdude09:11:26

@U4P4NREBY I'm considering replacing my persona/travel macbook air 2015 model with this :)

borkdude09:11:40

but I'm also considering buying a 16" M1 Max ...

simongray09:11:03

I definitely recommend the Macbook air. Those new pros are very tempting, but also a lot less portable than a macbook air. Personally, I’d rather just get a desktop down the line to supplement the laptop if I need more power, but I definitely understand craving those macbook pros.

simongray09:11:42

Dongle-free life and those new screens are also a nice plus, but not enough to make up for the reduced portability IMO.

borkdude09:11:39

I have tried the desktop, but I just don't like sitting at a desk all day :)

simongray09:11:56

Maybe just go all in and get a Pro laptop then 😛

simongray09:11:15

They’re expensive though, but obviously you get your money’s worth too…

borkdude09:11:38

I still have a Macbook Pro 2019 shit-kbd i9. It works well, the battery is a bit worn out though.

borkdude09:11:25

so not really in the market, but those are definitely on my radar

reefersleep10:11:29

I had a grope of the 14" and 16" pros in a shop the other day. There’s this oddly sharp exhaust vent in each side of the laptop, under the keyboard, right where you’d grab it and get nicked in skin between your thumb and index finger. That kind of sucks. And they felt really boxy and heavy, though according to the specs, the 16" wasn’t heavier than my 2015 15".

reefersleep10:11:00

The trackpad for the 16" was huge, too, maybe too big - I don’t know if perhaps you’d hit the pad while typing.

borkdude10:11:32

I was concerned about that too with my 15" i9, but I haven't had any trouble with that

borkdude10:11:40

although the large trackpad is overkill... imo

reefersleep11:11:28

I’d like to try it. Love the 2015 trackpad. Considering getting a magic pad, or whatever it’s called

mpenet13:11:34

I am waiting for the next air personally

mpenet13:11:40

stg with more memory

mpenet13:11:40

my wife's 16inch mpb i9 has again screen problems (it's the 3rd time)

I don't know what you are drinking Ray, but can I get some as well please?

lread15:11:56

Ray was inspired/amused by my "good morning" shuffle greeting snippet the other day and has been shuffling his "good morning"s ever since!

thomas15:11:25

not convinced... knowing Ray it must have involved some sort of drugs 😉

genRaiy15:11:52

it's the absence of drugs that gets me there these days !
