Good Morning!

slipset07:10:25

:rain_cloud: morning in Oslo today.

RAMart08:10:59

Hi all! Back from holiday I‘m looking forward to dive back into work. 💪

otfrom12:10:58

Morning. Windy and rainy in Tayside

otfrom12:10:25

@ramart you do realise it is the weekend now?

pez12:10:14

Morning. Not working weekends here.

dominicm12:10:15

Morning 🙂

I'd quite like to install an arch based distro on my laptop (to get pipewire) and would love any recommendations

practicalli-johnny11:10:35

Pipe wire is also on Ubuntu and if you need the latest version there is a PPA https://launchpad.net/~pipewire-debian/+archive/ubuntu/pipewire-upstream

otfrom14:10:50

I'm running that atm. I might just need to take the plunge and remove pulse, as that is what is making the headset sound rubbish

otfrom12:10:14

I'd like to get the sound on my Bluetooth headset working better

dharrigan15:10:03

I use Arch, plain ol'arch.

otfrom16:10:26

I think the installation instructions put me off. I'm used to not having to think about so many things.

dharrigan17:10:14

I understand, not quite my experience - I've done it quite often, across a number of machines, so I guess it's pretty routine for me.

dharrigan17:10:39

I got a few people to switch (who had a similar feeling as you) by getting them to try out on a VM a few times first.

dharrigan17:10:59

Then, once they've gained the confidence, they setup their own bare metal machine quite easily.

dharrigan17:10:31

Once setup, I've never had to reinstall the OS again, and that was ages ago, like years ago - as I love the nature of the rolling upgrade that arch brings.

otfrom17:10:23

any good pointers on getting something set up with java/clojure (tho I usually just dl this)/emacs in a windowing environment? I wonder if my problem is that things are just too open and I don't know where to look

dharrigan17:10:31

Well, I use i3wm and vim 🙂 Setting up i3 on arch is well documented (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/I3). The Arch wiki is really really good for documenting lots of things.

I would imagine whichever window manager you like, there would be very detailed instructions on the Arch wiki on how to set it up.

dharrigan17:10:17

I'm not saying you shouldn't look at Manjaro if you don't want to go down the setting up of Arch, it's just that Manjaro and Arch are a bit like cousins who aren't on the best of terms 😉 People who have problems with Manjaro tend to float to asking in the Arch forums (or on IRC), and the Arch people are like "go ask the Manajro people...as they've customised the distro....

otfrom18:10:56

I think wanting Wayland and pipewire are going to make things weird for me

dominicm10:10:11

Doesn't fedora offer pipewire/wayland now?

dominicm10:10:20

I think they made the switch a few months ago

otfrom10:10:02

I'll have a look. Thx!

emak07:10:25

After trying ubuntu I came back to arch rolling releases, but I installed manjaro i3 community version for a simpler install process. https://www.manjaro.org/download/#Community

for many a year

dharrigan15:10:05

imho, no need to go with any other flavour, like manjaro, for the vanilla arch does all that manjaro does, and is more current (as manjaro lags behind arch updates)
