nice bikes @slipset! fairly recently bought my first decent roadbike 😍

I found out South Korea has fantastic bike roads that get you all across the country, and going eastward from Seoul has really nice mountains to ride through.

Out of curiosity, what’s life like in GB these days?

According to rumours there is like no petrol, super expensive electricity and winter’s comming?

been working from home these last 4 years, which helps to dodge out the worst of it

there IS petrol up here but you might have to invest an hour or so to queue for it

I know gas and 'leccy rises are happening, but still waiting for solid figures

its the dismalness of the politics that's most depressing

the main opposition still doesn't quite seem to know to how point out the awfulness of this lamentable government

and the BBC news reporting is a major disappointment; they really are turning into government propaganda

I do want to be able to drive 400 miles to visit my Mum in a couple of weeks; that is my main worry about fuel

but aware how lucky that makes me, that we dont need to drive much for everyday living

yeah, don't need to drive much atm, which helps (hooray for working from home). Been ordering groceries online, and definitely had more subs and missing items over the last few months. Not as bad as the initial pandemic panic though

but I think this winter is going to be horrible

combination of slashed benefits, raised food and energy price and a steep tax hike to look forwards to next April

whilst Her Majesties' Government plays around with rocketry

feels like a proper King Canute moment is almost here

but the ones paying for it will not be the ones making decisions

yeah, broader fairness, justice, and general political stuff here is completely messed up. Privilege means that I'll be able to dodge the worst of it (for now).

I think that UK is going to have to jjoin the SingleMarket/Customs Union sooner or later

question is how much pain the government is prepared to inflict on us before they bow to the inevitable

the current lot dont really care, so we probably have to want until we have gotten rid of them

sooo... how many of the 5 years of this parliament are left? They'll only call an early GE if they think they can win

I had a taste of various import taxes from uk goods here. Until this gets somewhere I am not ordering anything from the uk

afaik, there are still a few "transition agreements" in place that haven't expired yet so I don't think we quite know all the pain yet

they've still not dared impose proper customs checks incoming

some online shops are a bit in the dark too, some will remove uk vat before shipping other leave it so you get double taxed for nothing etc etc

in short: not worth the trouble, I get the same supplies from the US for less heh

yeah so at the moment UK producers have the export disadvantage of full EU customs/excise but do not have the corresponding advantage against EU imports into the UK

giving them the worst of both worlds

I appreciate VAT collection is a import disincentive though

universities are under a lot of pressure atm. The gov't in the UK doesn't like them, esp liberal arts (history, literature, social sciences as well)

history and archaeology depts in universities are being downsized or closed
