Seems like every time I make a major breakthrough at work, my mind just spends the night listing all of the newly discovered possibilities. Does anyone else suffer from this? And on days where I fix a major bug, I sleep like a baby.

Morning. I definitely process possibilities and options off-work, but not while sleeping (afaik). 😃

I tend to debug and solve tricky problems while sleeping. I then wake up excited and surprisingly refreshed, hack it into emacs and often enough it works. That's why I like my in-sleep alter ego. 🙂

I used to experience that in my 20s/early 30s Not really happened since kids came along...

it's turned into "shower based debugging" for me after the kids

makes what used to be a 5 min shower turn into a 20min thing sometimes tho

For me, it can be some vague idea of a problem & a solution that wakes me up at 4 am. When that happens, it’s not very easy to fall asleep again 😴 More often thankfully, during my “recycle plastic garbage at the ♻️ station”-walks is where ideas pop up for me.

There's a part of the brain that constantly cycles thoughts when it isn't convinced that you have a way to actually process them. The main thing that works here is externalizing the ideas and making sure that you'll actually read them later (e.g. place the paper on your desk where you'll see it on Monday morning). Generally speaking, if you can't sleep, get out of bed and go to a different room for a while and do something quiet (no screens!). This is a good time to consider grabbing a notebook and emptying your brain, but I also find reading a book helpful on the really bad nights.
