Good Morning!

gklijs06:07:36

Noisy morning, pile driving nearby again, just as last week. The perks of working at home..

Ben Hammond09:07:18

that put a smile on my face simpler times

Ben Hammond09:07:31

(not really, I know; just for me)

gklijs11:07:22

I had some version of it on the PS1 in simpler times, so can relate. Actually seems like they might be done, haven't heard it for a few hours now.

gklijs11:07:41

And they started again. Will go to the office tomorrow for a bit of relieve.

Good morning!

getting some thunderstorms coming up. Hoping it doesn't bring the same flash floods that other storms seem to be doing atm

otfrom10:07:37

(coming up means most likely Tuesday)

Ben Hammond10:07:37

how much electrical energy is released globally in thunderstorms? compared to human elecrticity generation?

Ben Hammond10:07:53

oooh a gigajoule in every bolt

Ben Hammond10:07:58

didn't realise Back to the Future had done their research...

mccraigmccraig10:07:27

that's 27 tonnes of lard per bolt

Ben Hammond10:07:38

maybe we just need to install wave power generators in every underground railway station

Martynas Maciulevičius10:07:42

I've read about it several weeks ago. It's not how much is generated that counts but how much we can gather. The thunderbolt is very brief and it's hard to construct infrastructure that gathers even a fraction of it. So yeah. Even though the earth is moving we can't put it onto a cogwheel...

Martynas Maciulevičius10:07:54

But well... if you have an idea, go for it.

gklijs11:07:38

@U793EL04V funny you mention Back to the Future. Watched a documentary yesterday, originally it was supposed to be the energy from a nuclear test. It was changed to be able to stick to the budget.

Martynas Maciulevičius11:07:21

Oh right, I read it here, so it's not a scientific proof: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvesting_lightning_energy "the energy in a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderstorm is comparable to that of an https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_bomb, but trying to harvest the energy of lightning from the ground is hopeless" But it's wikipedia.

Ben Hammond11:07:05

hopeless does not sound like a scientifically calibrated term

Martynas Maciulevičius11:07:11

@U793EL04V it is wikipedia, after all. And it's an interview with a PRIVATE owned company which may want to protect their newly acquired technology. And he said not "hopeless" but he said "hopeless from the ground".

I think in some Frankenstein things they use a kite to capture it? Still it seems the investment to handle the peak would be huge compared to the gain with how often it will be hit.

val_waeselynck16:07:33

Something tells me that if you set up too much energy capture, the bolt will want to hit somewhere else

ordnungswidrig10:07:27

Maybe the idea is to use the bolt to light some treen and then use the heat to turn water to steam and finally electricity. You know, efficiency doesn't matter because thunderstorms are free!!! 😈

val_waeselynck12:07:30

@U054UD60U why not just use photovoltaics then ;)

reefersleep21:07:09

> So yeah. Even though the earth is moving we can’t put it onto a cogwheel... @invertisment_clojuria This reminds me of the concept of a Dyson Sphere, which I encountered in some sci fi novel. Fun thought experiment, and I loved the depiction in the novel.

Martynas Maciulevičius03:07:22

Ah, the sphere which captures whole planet... Well I think that if this kind of sphere would be constructed just to gather lightning then we'd have some immediate environmental consequences. For lightning I imagined something less intrusive. Like a drone which flies to charge up a battery. (internet drones may be onto something here)

dharrigan06:07:53

There's a really really good series on youtube called "Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell". Here's a link "https://www.youtube.com/c/inanutshell/videos". They have one on building a dyson sphere:

Which captures a sun, right? To harvest its energy.

reefersleep22:07:45

I’ll have to listen to those Kurzgesagt peeps at some point

Särö Västskog, Swedish west coast (less than an hour's drive south from Gothenburg). Morning!

It is a nature reserve (if that's the term). Quite a gem, if you're ever in the vicinity.

otfrom14:07:09

I wonder which way the prevailing winds blow...

pez14:07:35

Haha, yes, it's amazing that trees grow there, but they really need to yield.
