Good Morning!

RAMart06:02:09

:spock-hand:

agigao08:02:53

Eventually decided in favour of 27" 4K monitor. 32" was too large to work in front of and 34" ultrawide felt like more head spinning than I’d enjoy :D - https://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-27UK650-W-4k-uhd-led-monitor and although this LG costs half of Lenovo’s 4K/UW, it has much better picture quality.

kardan19:02:07

I went for a 34" & now my head is spinning…

borkdude08:02:50

Looks like a good monitor!

ordnungswidrig09:02:38

@chokheliIf 32" is too large maybe sit farer away 😈

😛 3
agigao15:02:39

Well, I had to sit about 2 meters away :D

dharrigan09:02:13

Alternatively...

mpenet14:02:39

dog owners: anybody is paranoid with loosing the puppy while "in the wild"? any tractive users?

javahippie14:02:32

We don’t let ours off the leash in the woods, too much energy. Working hard on impulse control, maybe one day

mpenet14:02:07

I was reading about that, training with long leash too. But I think i might go all in and also throw in a gps gadget for peace of mind. Our garden is also probably safe but it's hard to make sure it's 100% closed

mpenet14:02:47

I think it might also depend on breed. if it has high prey drive or not

javahippie14:02:54

Long leash is also great 👍 Might think of a GPS tracker, too, when we finally let her off leash, it’s a good idea

mpenet14:02:09

tractive seems quite good for a very decent price

👍 3
javahippie14:02:11

Helped catching a runaway dog in the woods during a run, some weeks ago and just thought “I’d be devastated if it was mine”

mpenet14:02:37

we have a whippet, there's no catching him if doesn't want to

mpenet14:02:53

at least once an adult

mpenet14:02:16

I guess for almost any dog of regular size the same is true anyway

javahippie14:02:23

Our Dalmatian is way faster than we are, too. I’m pretty convinced that she would not run too far from us, she’s really well attached. But if she sees something moving, she will be off and might not realize where she is going

mpenet14:02:02

that's my fear too

genRaiy14:02:17

we take the dog to an off-leash area where h e is very excited to meet other dogs

genRaiy14:02:31

you can test recall in that situation to build your confidence

genRaiy14:02:48

the area is fenced

mpenet14:02:32

sounds great, I need to find some place like that

javahippie14:02:37

That’s great!

genRaiy14:02:50

it's definitely a lot of work to build good recall and he isn't 100% yet

genRaiy15:02:31

damn, you made me reply in a thread 😆

genRaiy15:02:15

tractive looks good, I actually like the activity part more than the tracking tbh ... it's not always easy to gauge that

mpenet15:02:30

yeah, fitbit for dogs 🙂

😬 3
mpenet15:02:41

I was surprised by the pricing, it's actually quite cheap

mpenet15:02:57

I mean the subscription, given it has edge

genRaiy15:02:02

yes ... way down from most that you see

mpenet15:02:04

or 4g or whatever they use

javahippie15:02:05

My wife bought an activity tracker for our dog, but it was a piece of crap, stopped using it immediately

genRaiy15:02:08

so it's 50 euros + 4 euros per month

mpenet15:02:06

you can have some extra insurance thing if you break/loose it too I think

mpenet15:02:15

but it just adds on the base price

javahippie15:02:10

On Amazon some people complain about battery life, though?

mpenet15:02:37

I wonder if they have an api

mpenet15:02:03

I guess the battery is counted in days, so even if you end up with half of what they claim i'd say it's usable

mpenet15:02:11

5days iirc

mpenet15:02:42

but it's difficult to say without having experience

mpenet14:02:08

sorry, should be off-topic-eu

otfrom14:02:36

@mpenet I thought the topic of this channel was off-topic stuff 🙂

3
otfrom14:02:49

I mean we can talk clojure if we want to...

mpenet14:02:53

it's mostly greetings 🙂

otfrom14:02:26

well, otherwise the channel would appear empty

mccraigmccraig16:02:31

greetings are good imho - they keep the channel 'alive' for when people want to talk about actual clojurey stuff

reefersleep19:02:08

Evening everybody

reefersleep19:02:18

No dogs here, only cats 🙂

reefersleep20:02:40

Anyone got any recommendations for a mesh network for home? Our router isn’t strong enough to reach across our whole house. Looking for something easy to set up, with nodes that are not too ugly 🙂 There’s cable going from the bottom floor to the top, which would make for a much stronger link than the intermittently failing wifi signal between the floors, so the nodes need to be able to do cabled connections, too.

javahippie20:02:17

I have a AVM FritzBox with Mesh repeaters. They work okayish

reefersleep20:02:14

Thanks, I’ll have a look 🙂

mpenet06:02:07

Very happy with google nest wifi. It just works and requires no fiddling

👍 3
dharrigan20:02:21

A friend of mine had the same issue

dharrigan20:02:25

I recommended a UDM

dharrigan20:02:39

With that, you can then add on extra APs

dharrigan20:02:45

He likes the UDM a lot

dharrigan20:02:20

I too use Unifi products, I have to APs that are "meshed"

dharrigan20:02:37

with the controller software running on a VM (the UDM has the controller software already running on it)

dharrigan20:02:02

I live in a 3 story, so one downstairs, one upstairs. Seems to work grand.

reefersleep20:02:38

Looks great for tinkering. I think it does more than I need, but maybe I’ll discover that I can’t live without those features later on 🙂

reefersleep20:02:23

When you say “meshed”, do you mean that those AP’s are separate networks that you need to log onto and switch between?

reefersleep20:02:47

I’m specifically looking for something that acts as a single network.

dharrigan20:02:19

a single network

dharrigan20:02:28

With the unifi, you can create multiple networks

dharrigan20:02:33

2ghz/5ghz whatever

dharrigan20:02:55

At home I have one network that is both 2ghz and 5ghz

dharrigan20:02:04

clients connect as they see fit to which works for them

dharrigan20:02:24

It's very configurable.

reefersleep20:02:40

That’s pretty standard, isn’t it? Not to put the unifi down. But I’ve had 2/5 for years on different routers.

dharrigan20:02:55

Sure, but you were asking if it could act as a single network.

reefersleep20:02:07

From the article you linked to, I think you are definitely right! Sounds very configurable.

dharrigan20:02:12

Why would it work differently, if it's pretty standard!

reefersleep20:02:31

@U11EL3P9U sorry, didn’t know how to express that properly. Maybe it was offensive :l

dharrigan20:02:39

What I like about unifi is that I get lots of stats out of it and I can create hotspot networks that are vlan isolated off that have access control (i.e., vouchers, etc..)

reefersleep20:02:42

I’m not very good at networks (yet) 😄

dharrigan20:02:59

It's okay 🙂

dharrigan20:02:09

I can also highly recommend opnsense as a router/firewall.

reefersleep20:02:30

Yeah I read about that, sounds interesting! Not sure if I need it, but it’d be fun to tinker with. And, with more and more IOT, maybe it makes sense to get more control.

dharrigan20:02:55

I run my crypto stuff on a vlan

dharrigan20:02:05

zero access to my home lan

dharrigan20:02:22

I can ssh, it cannot see anything out 🙂

reefersleep20:02:55

I’ve been concerned about our security, we’ve got a media server which has internet access and no particular security in front of it :l

reefersleep20:02:12

And it has network sharing properties, which I see as gaping security holes.

reefersleep20:02:32

I mean, it’s nothing serious if it were hacked somehow, but why leave any holes.

dharrigan20:02:39

I would recommend running wireguard/zerotier and put your media serfver on it

dharrigan20:02:46

turn off external access

dharrigan20:02:54

but allow your zerotier/wireguard network access to the media server

dharrigan20:02:06

then no matter where you go, you can access the media server.

dharrigan20:02:09

I use plex myself 🙂

reefersleep20:02:37

I’ve considered Plex, but turned it down due to the security issues… And actually, idk if we really need it. We mostly just watch stuff straight off the tv screen.

dharrigan21:02:15

Security issues?

reefersleep21:02:31

Well, the unknown unknowns. My lack of knowledge and confidence in our security 🙂

reefersleep21:02:19

I’m afraid to open even more up by letting our server be accessible via the internet, as I guess most people do with plex.

dharrigan21:02:07

Everything has security issues. I've ben using plex for years without issue

dharrigan21:02:28

I would really recommend running your own VPN, i.e., wireguard/zerotier.

dharrigan21:02:34

Put what you want on those interfaces

reefersleep21:02:38

Yeah I know. I can’t live inside a safe.

dharrigan21:02:47

Then your router won't allow anything in

reefersleep21:02:08

I’m going to take a look at wireguard and zerotier 🙂 Thanks!

dharrigan21:02:21

Shout up if you need help 🙂

reefersleep21:02:54

And the UDM looks very nice. This kind of stuff is exactly what I was looking for, advice “around” what I’m looking for. Mesh is what I need, but improved network control on top could be a lovely upgrade.

reefersleep21:02:10

So thanks, I will 😄

dharrigan21:02:02

I'm sure you can youtube it for some reviews 🙂

reefersleep21:02:48

Already tubin’ 😄
