Good morning!

genRaiy08:05:23

nods mornin

ordnungswidrig08:05:57

@raymcdermott are you actually in europe now or in a CET-compatible timezone?

genRaiy08:05:45

One of my waiters just had this .... Waiter, waiter I have a 🐛 in my Clojure code ... so I guess I know what I'm doing this morning

genRaiy08:05:07

@ordnungswidrig I live in Belgium, have done for > 12 years

ordnungswidrig08:05:09

@raymcdermott why did I put you in South Africa? I guess a TooManyPeopleMetAtConferencesException 😛

genRaiy08:05:27

god in himmel

plexus08:05:57

'n baie goeie more aan elkeen! :flag-za:

genRaiy08:05:18

I did work in post-apartheid ZA for a short while (on their vehicle licensing system - using awk!!) but not sure I have ever shared that experience

genRaiy08:05:36

made me appreciate how much colonialists can fuck up a truly beautiful country - I mean they did it everywhere but that one was / is a horrible mess

genRaiy08:05:05

who said keep it light?

thomas09:05:28

Surely ZA is in a fairly CET-compatible timezone?

genRaiy09:05:37

pretty sure they're also in the eurovision song contest, though not sure that's a TZ thing ... really not sure what that is

genRaiy09:05:37

hmmm ... actually I'm wrong about that ... but my other point stands ... still not really sure what qualification is for that

practicalli-johnny09:05:07

@raymcdermott Eurovision was never the same for me after Terry Wogan stopped being the voice over in the UK. Although Graham Norton wasn't too bad.

genRaiy09:05:48

I think Graham Norton captures the campness of the contest's current manifestation well, Wogan had more of a pity vibe for me that I didn't warm to

thomas09:05:14

EuroVision would have been about 20k from where I live at the moment, closest I'd ever get.

thomas09:05:42

Any ideas what the plans for it are? just do it next year or so?

genRaiy09:05:04

don't know but hopefully they'll run it where you are if you intended to go along - looks like great fun to be at, very spectacular

plexus10:05:56

yeah @thomas they're gonna have a regular edition again next year. @raymcdermott you're thinking of Australia

genRaiy10:05:05

😆 yes and also maybe Israel

ordnungswidrig12:05:51

There is the diagram of the different concepts of “Europe”

ordnungswidrig12:05:42

Africa looks similar

synthomat14:05:25

uh, that’s really interesting

otfrom14:05:24

Eurovision is the European Broadcasting Union. Australia is an associate member. Lots of other countries are as well tho and I'm not sure why they aren't in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Broadcasting_Union#Members

otfrom14:05:43

I would root for many of those countries

otfrom14:05:19

and Israel is not a member any more (despite being ln this year.) I'm confused

otfrom14:05:37

"Eligible participants include primarily Active Members (as opposed to Associate Members) of the EBU. Active members are those who are located in states that fall within the European Broadcasting Area, or are member states of the Council of Europe.[23]"

genRaiy19:05:23

the European Broadcasting Area is not contiguous so states that fall within it are, essentially, random
