Anyone else use a pen plotter to make art?

I have the iDraw A3. If I had to buy again, I'd get the H-version. Its nice to not have to think about the small (but existing!) drop in Z-value between the edges when aligning the pen. Reg. G-code, you can easily use vpype to create G-code from SVG, and send it to the plotter using the Universal G-code Sender (UGS). Then you don't have to use the Inkscape plugin, which works fine, but is laggy for complicated SVG files.

Thanks for the input! I decided to order the A4 version, mainly because of the cost+import tax.

The iDraw A4 works great!

Beautiful 🙌

If you get tired of wearing down pens, I can really recommend getting a cheapish fountainpen to plot with. Lasts forever, and then you get to nerd out over inks

Wish I had one... And time to make art 🤔 nice moire spirals!

I was considering buying one about six months ago. I remember looking into AxiDraw/iDraw/NextDraw, but I couldn't make a decision. Any tips/recommendations? Regarding size, I think A3 would be enough for my use case. I am trying to build an svg editor with procedural capabilities, and I want to support converting SVGs to g-code. Maybe A2 is a better option, if I also want to play with my own creations?

It doesn't appear as if the AxiDraw is being sold any longer, they recommend the NextDraw now. When I purchased mine it was the cheapest option by far (~$400?) and I have the v3 (A4) model. Very fun toy at that price point and size. Looks like the equivalent Nextdraw is ~$1000. The AxiDraw has libraries for converting SVGs, so I have not attempted to roll-my-own g-code.

Thanks for the info. The prices also look different.. The iDraw H A3 seems to be a good option right now.

What was the draw time (ish) for the above plot?

~ 10 minutes per layer, 20 min total

Nice 🚤

Uhhh! Nice! I had a massive one I sold off to an artist in Berlin. It was great fun to play with but took up oh so much space. I have a cricut for cutting things but I know that can also be used for plotting so I was thinking of getting back into it
