If you were buying an iMac for development. Would you be happy with 16GB memory?

Oliver George05:06:04

(As a #cljsrn type developer)

Oliver George05:06:06

27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display 3.6GHz 8-core 9th-generation Intel Core i9 processor, Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz 16GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory Radeon Pro 580X with 8GB of GDDR5 memory

(Adding another 16GB drives the price up 13%)

16GB works fine on my work MacBook. On my private computer I have 32GB because there is more Virtual Box and Docker containers flying around there. 😃 So, it depends a bit on what else, besides cljsrn, you do.

raspasov07:06:04

@olivergeorge I would go for 32GB if possible

16GB might not be enough, if say you have XCode + Simulator + IntelliJ/other editor + multiple JVMs + Photoshop + multiple browser tabs; I used to have 16GB and while not completely impossible, I could notice some slow down especially with many applications open; I’m with 32GB right now and that’s more than plenty (MacBook Pro 2018)

If you’re buying the new machine through your business, look into renting the machine rather than buying it. That way you pay a monthly fee and then at the end of it, you get to buy it for a symbolic price of say $£€1. That way you feel less of the price pinch.

raspasov07:06:51

Is that an Apple option? You mean like a payment plan?

dotemacs07:06:19

I don’t think it’s an Apple thing. It’s through some third party company. But you get all the benefits like you would if you bought directly. You choose your spec.. and if anything, if your machine breaks, they give you a loan in the meantime. I know this exists in the UK, this type of service.

I see, thanks 🙂

I’m on 16GB and I going to upgrade to 32GB soon-ish.

borkdude09:06:27

As a rule of thumb, always go with the max memory you can afford. Once you buy a Mac, it can't be upgraded.
