do people prefer this over the IRC

roberto20:06:09

I’m conflicted. I like that I can login and view past messages. Can’t do that with irc. And can also view history.

akiva20:06:04

I’m ambivalent. I was a hardcore IRC user in the 90s. Thinking about that and then this, I see few downsides to this over that.

roberto20:06:08

yeah, I see downsides also. But it also shows how dated IRC is and how it should improve.

jballanc20:06:14

IRC with a bouncer to keep history isn’t so bad…and #C03S1KBA2 is logged, and should be searchable “in theory"

roberto20:06:36

yeah, but it isn’t as “user friendly”. Most of the irc history I’ve seen is just a big pile of plain text and you have to search using cmd-f on the browser. It pales in comparison to slack’s search.

roberto21:06:12

maybe this means there is an opportunity to build a service with better UX on top of irc.

juhoteperi21:06:57

@roberto: Have you seen https://www.irccloud.com/? It is probably the easiest IRC client with history there is. Unfortunately it is still missing proper search.

juhoteperi21:06:42

And unfortunately it looks like it is barely developed

roberto21:06:56

don’t get me wrong, I love irc. I’m sentimentally attached to it.

roberto21:06:06

would love to see it get some UX love tho

roberto21:06:27

I didn’t know what I was missing, honestly, until I started using Slack at work.

juhoteperi21:06:45

Especially I dislike that I have to have separate windows open for different Slack communities. Irc and Flowdock support multiple servers/organizations in one client.

roberto21:06:03

hmmm, I have all the slack communities in one client.

roberto21:06:18

including work slack

juhoteperi21:06:00

Is that with OS X or Windows client? Browser version allows to switch the account but that is not much use as I can't see by a glance which channels are active

roberto21:06:13

in fact, i’m using two accounts in one client
